Hysteroscopic polypectomy?

Hello, I underwent a hysteroscopic polypectomy on June 15.
I felt my period starting on June 30, but the flow was very light (not requiring any sanitary pads) until July 2.
On July 3, the flow began to increase, and as of today, July 7, I am still experiencing bleeding.
Is this normal? Which day should be considered the first day of my period? Thank you.

Lily, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/07/07

Dr. Cai Yonglong reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Menstruation from July 2 to July 7 is considered normal.
If it exceeds 7 to 8 days, please visit the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic.

More Info

After undergoing a hysteroscopic polypectomy, it is not uncommon for women to experience changes in their menstrual cycle. The procedure involves the removal of polyps from the uterus, which can temporarily affect the hormonal balance and the lining of the uterus.
In your case, you had the surgery on June 15, and you noticed your menstrual period starting on June 30. The initial light bleeding you experienced could be attributed to several factors, including the healing process of the uterine lining after the surgery. It is important to note that the first day of your menstrual cycle is typically counted as the first day of full flow, which in your case seems to have started on July 3 when the bleeding became more substantial.

It is not unusual for menstrual cycles to be irregular or for the flow to be lighter than normal after such a procedure. The body may take some time to adjust, and it is common for women to experience variations in their menstrual flow for a few cycles following surgery. The continued bleeding you are experiencing until July 7 could be a result of the body’s response to the surgery, and it may take a few cycles for your menstrual pattern to stabilize.

However, it is essential to monitor the nature of your bleeding. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider:
1. Heavy Bleeding: If you are soaking through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours, this could indicate a problem.

2. Severe Pain: While some discomfort is expected, severe pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications should be evaluated.

3. Foul Odor: If the bleeding has a foul smell, this could indicate an infection.

4. Fever: A fever accompanying abnormal bleeding could also suggest an infection or other complications.

In terms of your menstrual cycle, it may take a few months for your periods to return to a regular pattern. Hormonal fluctuations can occur post-surgery, and your body may need time to readjust. If your periods do not stabilize or if you have concerns about the bleeding, it is advisable to follow up with your gynecologist. They may recommend an ultrasound or further evaluation to ensure that there are no complications from the surgery, such as retained tissue or other issues.

In summary, while some changes in your menstrual cycle after a hysteroscopic polypectomy are normal, it is crucial to be vigilant about any concerning symptoms. Keeping a record of your menstrual cycle, including the flow and any associated symptoms, can be helpful for your healthcare provider in assessing your situation during follow-up visits.
