My stomach..?
Hello, I would like to ask about something.
Last night, I suddenly had severe abdominal pain that woke me up from sleep.
The pain was so intense that I couldn't bend over to relieve it, and my stomach was making very loud and intense noises.
I could also feel vibrations when I touched my abdomen.
After about 30 minutes, I felt the urge to have a bowel movement.
When I went to the bathroom, the stool felt like it was coming out forcefully, almost like a "spray" (sorry, that's the best way I can describe it).
After that, I felt somewhat better, but today my stomach has felt uncomfortable all day.
May I ask what might be happening? By the way, I ate the same as usual the day before, but I did drink rose tea with honey that night, and that's when this started...
Please help me understand, thank you.

Your symptoms are caused by sudden cramping due to diarrhea, which is related to acute gastroenteritis.

More Info
Sudden abdominal pain can be alarming and may arise from a variety of causes, ranging from benign to serious conditions. Based on your description, it seems that you experienced acute abdominal pain that was severe enough to wake you from sleep, accompanied by audible bowel sounds and a sense of urgency to have a bowel movement. After this episode, you felt some relief but continued to experience a sense of discomfort throughout the day.
Possible Causes
1. Gastroenteritis: This is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines, often caused by viral or bacterial infections. Symptoms typically include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. The sudden onset of pain and the urgency to use the restroom could suggest this condition, especially if you had any recent exposure to contaminated food or water.
2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits. Stress, certain foods, and beverages (like the rose tea you mentioned) can trigger symptoms in susceptible individuals.
3. Food Intolerance or Allergy: Sometimes, specific foods or drinks can lead to gastrointestinal distress. If the rose tea or honey was new to your diet, it could have caused a reaction.
4. Bowel Obstruction: Although less common, a sudden and severe abdominal pain that is accompanied by changes in bowel habits can indicate a bowel obstruction. This is a medical emergency and usually presents with severe pain, vomiting, and inability to pass gas or stool.
5. Appendicitis: While your pain seems to have resolved after a bowel movement, appendicitis typically presents with persistent pain that worsens over time, often starting around the navel and then shifting to the lower right abdomen.
6. Diverticulitis: This condition involves inflammation of small pouches that can form in the walls of the colon. It can cause sudden abdominal pain, often in the lower left abdomen, and may be accompanied by changes in bowel habits.
Recommendations
Given that your symptoms improved after a bowel movement, it is possible that you experienced a temporary gastrointestinal upset, possibly related to something you ate or drank. However, since you mentioned that the pain was severe and woke you from sleep, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely.
1. Hydration: Ensure you stay well-hydrated, especially if you experienced diarrhea. Electrolyte solutions can be beneficial.
2. Diet: Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods for a few days. Stick to a bland diet (like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) to help your digestive system recover.
3. Rest: Allow your body to rest and recover. Stress can exacerbate gastrointestinal issues, so try to relax.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on any recurring symptoms. If the pain returns, worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as fever, persistent vomiting, or blood in your stool, seek medical attention promptly.
5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms persist or if you have concerns about your health, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, such as blood tests or imaging studies, to rule out more serious conditions.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may have resolved, it is crucial to remain vigilant about any changes in your health. Sudden abdominal pain can have various causes, and understanding your body’s signals is key to maintaining your health. If in doubt, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
