Yellow nasal mucus?

Hello, doctor.
In the past week, I have noticed that the inner walls of my nostrils are sticky with yellow nasal crusts, which I clear out about twice a day.
Previously, my nasal mucus was not usually this yellow.
What could be the cause of this? Do I need to see a doctor? Other than this, I do not have any other issues.

Guang, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/07/15

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: If you continue to have yellow pus-like nasal discharge or crusting, it may be related to a bacterial infection.
If it does not improve, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation and treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info

Yellow nasal mucus can be a common concern, and understanding its implications is crucial for determining when to seek medical attention from an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. The presence of yellow mucus, especially if it is thick and adheres to the nasal passages, can indicate several underlying conditions, primarily related to infections or inflammation.

Understanding Yellow Nasal Mucus
1. Infection: Yellow mucus often suggests a bacterial infection, particularly if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain, or pressure. This is commonly seen in cases of sinusitis, where the sinuses become inflamed and produce excess mucus. The color change from clear to yellow typically indicates that the body is fighting off an infection, as white blood cells accumulate in the mucus to combat pathogens.

2. Allergies: Allergic reactions can also lead to changes in mucus color. While allergic rhinitis usually produces clear mucus, prolonged exposure to allergens can lead to secondary infections, resulting in yellow mucus. If you have a history of allergies, consider whether you have been exposed to any new allergens.

3. Environmental Factors: Dry air, pollution, and irritants can cause the nasal passages to become inflamed, leading to thickened mucus. This can also result in yellow mucus, especially if there is a secondary infection.

4. Chronic Conditions: Conditions such as chronic rhinosinusitis can lead to persistent yellow mucus. This condition is characterized by prolonged inflammation of the nasal and sinus mucosa, often requiring medical intervention.

When to Seek ENT Care
Given your observation of yellow, thick nasal mucus, it is advisable to consider the following factors to determine if you should seek ENT care:
- Duration: If the yellow mucus persists for more than a week without improvement, it is a good idea to consult an ENT specialist. Prolonged symptoms may indicate a more serious underlying issue that requires treatment.

- Associated Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as fever, facial pain or pressure, headache, or a significant change in your sense of smell, these could indicate a sinus infection or other complications that warrant medical evaluation.

- Nasal Obstruction: If you find that the mucus is causing significant nasal obstruction or difficulty breathing, this is another reason to seek medical attention.
- Previous History: If you have a history of recurrent sinus infections or other ENT-related issues, it may be beneficial to consult with a specialist sooner rather than later.

Conclusion
In summary, while yellow nasal mucus can be a common occurrence, especially during cold and flu seasons, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If the yellow mucus persists, is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, or if you have a history of ENT issues, seeking care from an ENT specialist is advisable. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including nasal endoscopy or imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include medications such as antibiotics, nasal corticosteroids, or saline irrigation to alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
