A red and swollen lump outside the anus?

There is a swollen lump on the right side of the anus, but it does not produce pus or cause significant bleeding as some people describe.
When I push it inward, I feel less pain, but it soon comes back out.
I only feel pain when the anus is contracting.

Dr. Chen Jiaming reply Surgery

Based solely on your description, it seems like it could be hemorrhoids (an actual diagnosis still requires a direct consultation and examination).
The management depends on your symptoms; it can involve topical medications, surgical intervention, or avoiding excessive friction and other aggravating factors.

Understanding painful anal swelling can be a complex issue, as it can arise from various causes, and it is essential to approach it with a thorough understanding of the anatomy and potential underlying conditions. The symptoms you describe, including swelling on the right side of the anus, intermittent pain, and the ability to alleviate discomfort by pushing it inward, suggest a few possible conditions.

One common cause of anal swelling is hemorrhoids, which are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus. They can be classified into two types: internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids are located inside the rectum and typically do not cause pain unless they protrude outside the anal opening. External hemorrhoids, on the other hand, are located under the skin around the anus and can become painful, especially if a blood clot forms within them, leading to a condition known as thrombosed hemorrhoids. The swelling and pain you experience could very well be attributed to this condition.

Another possibility is an anal fissure, which is a small tear in the lining of the anus. Fissures can cause sharp pain during bowel movements and may lead to swelling and discomfort in the anal area. They often occur due to passing hard stools or straining during bowel movements.

In some cases, an abscess or infection can cause swelling and pain in the anal region. An anal abscess is a collection of pus that can develop due to an infection in the anal glands, leading to swelling, redness, and pain. While you mentioned that there is no discharge of pus or blood, it is still important to consider this possibility, especially if the swelling persists or worsens.

It is also worth noting that conditions such as skin tags, warts, or other benign growths can cause localized swelling and discomfort. These are generally not serious but can be bothersome.

To address your symptoms effectively, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend further tests, such as an anoscopy, to visualize the anal canal and rectum. Treatment options will depend on the underlying cause of the swelling. For hemorrhoids, lifestyle changes such as increasing fiber intake, staying hydrated, and using topical treatments may be recommended. For fissures, topical anesthetics or medications to promote healing may be prescribed.

In the meantime, you can manage discomfort by taking warm baths, using over-the-counter pain relief medications, and applying topical creams designed for anal discomfort. However, these measures are not a substitute for professional medical advice.

In conclusion, while the symptoms you describe may suggest hemorrhoids or an anal fissure, it is essential to seek medical attention to determine the exact cause of your anal swelling and pain. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help alleviate your symptoms and prevent further complications. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to health concerns, especially those involving sensitive areas like the anal region.
