Are you pregnant?

I had my period on July 5.
I had sexual intercourse on July 7, July 9, and July 13.
Starting on July 15, I experienced bloating and occasional sharp pains in my lower abdomen, similar to the feeling before my period.
This lasted for three days.
I had an ultrasound on July 17, but it did not show any signs of pregnancy.
Is it still possible that these are signs of pregnancy? (I want to get pregnant.)

Baozi, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/07/17

Hello, Miss Baozi: Your menstruation just ended on July 5th, and even if you are pregnant now, an ultrasound or urine test would not be able to detect it.
Based on the dates of your menstrual cycle, your symptoms may likely be related to ovulation.
Abdominal bloating and sharp pain caused by pregnancy typically occur after a missed period.

Determining whether you could be pregnant involves understanding the early signs and symptoms of pregnancy, as well as the timing of your menstrual cycle and ovulation. Based on the timeline you've provided, let's break down the situation.

You mentioned that your last menstrual period started on July 5, and you had sexual intercourse on July 7, 9, and 13. If you have a typical 28-day cycle, ovulation would likely occur around July 19, which is about 14 days after the start of your last period. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so having intercourse on the 7th, 9th, or 13th could potentially lead to fertilization if ovulation occurs shortly after.

The symptoms you described, such as lower abdominal bloating and occasional sharp pains, can be indicative of several things. These sensations may be related to ovulation, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), or early pregnancy. It's important to note that many women experience similar symptoms before their period starts, which can make it challenging to distinguish between PMS and early pregnancy signs.

Regarding the ultrasound you had on July 17, it's possible that it was too early to detect a pregnancy. Most ultrasounds can reliably detect a pregnancy around 5-6 weeks after the last menstrual period, which would be about a week or two after the date of your ultrasound. If you conceived during your fertile window, it may not have been detectable yet.

In terms of early pregnancy signs, common symptoms include:
1. Missed Period: This is often the first sign of pregnancy, but since your period is not due yet, it may not apply.

2. Nausea and Vomiting: Often referred to as "morning sickness," this can occur as early as two weeks after conception.

3. Breast Changes: Tenderness, swelling, or darkening of the areolas can occur early in pregnancy.

4. Fatigue: Increased levels of progesterone can lead to feelings of tiredness.

5. Frequent Urination: This can start early due to hormonal changes.

6. Mood Swings: Hormonal fluctuations can lead to emotional changes.

If you suspect you might be pregnant, the best course of action is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, but some sensitive tests can detect pregnancy a few days before your expected period.
If the test is positive, or if you continue to experience symptoms, it would be advisable to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and to confirm the pregnancy through blood tests or a follow-up ultrasound.

In conclusion, while the symptoms you're experiencing could potentially indicate pregnancy, they could also be related to your menstrual cycle or other factors. Monitoring your symptoms and taking a pregnancy test when appropriate will provide you with clearer answers. If you have any concerns or if symptoms worsen, don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance.
