The left rib cage feels unusual?

Hello Dr.
Chen, when I lie flat, my left rib cage is elevated while the right side is flat, and I feel that 2-3 ribs below my left nipple are inwardly depressed.
My abdomen is also somewhat uncomfortable, and I would like to inquire about what could be causing this (I only recently noticed it).
Could this potentially be a serious condition? (I was previously told that I have a slight scoliosis.)

Mike, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/07/19

Dr. Chen Bochen reply Orthopedics

Hello Mike, mild scoliosis is very common; about 3 to 4 out of every 10 people have some degree of spinal asymmetry, so there's no need to worry about having scoliosis.
Just engage in more physical activity to help your body adapt, and it can self-correct to alleviate any pain.
Rib cage indentations do not occur suddenly; they are usually a long-standing condition that you may only notice one day.
Indentations on both sides of the abdomen are also quite common and can be due to congenital structure, so there's no need to be anxious about that.
If you experience discomfort in your abdomen, it's best to get it checked.

Uneven rib cage can be a concerning issue, especially when accompanied by discomfort or pain. The asymmetry you describe, with the left side of your rib cage appearing higher than the right, and the sensation of some ribs being sunken in, could be attributed to several factors.
One potential cause is scoliosis, which is a condition characterized by an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. Scoliosis can lead to uneven rib cages because the curvature can cause one side of the rib cage to protrude more than the other. This condition can be congenital (present at birth) or develop during childhood or adolescence. If you have previously been diagnosed with a slight scoliosis, it is possible that this is contributing to the asymmetry of your rib cage.

Another possible cause could be muscular imbalances. If certain muscles on one side of your body are stronger or tighter than those on the other side, this can lead to uneven rib positioning. This is often seen in individuals who have a dominant side, which can lead to postural issues over time. Additionally, conditions such as pectus excavatum (a sunken chest) or pectus carinatum (a protruding chest) can also affect the appearance of the rib cage.

In terms of the discomfort you are experiencing in your abdomen, it is important to consider that the rib cage and the abdominal area are closely related. Issues with the rib cage can sometimes lead to referred pain in the abdomen, or vice versa. For instance, if the ribs are not moving properly due to tight muscles or joint dysfunction, this can lead to discomfort in the surrounding areas.

While the uneven rib cage and associated discomfort may not necessarily indicate a severe condition, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience increasing pain, difficulty breathing, or any other concerning symptoms, it would be prudent to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough examination, which may include imaging studies such as X-rays or MRIs, to assess the structure of your rib cage and spine.

In the meantime, consider engaging in exercises that promote good posture and strengthen the muscles of your back and core. Stretching and strengthening exercises can help alleviate some of the discomfort and may improve the symmetry of your rib cage over time. Physical therapy can also be beneficial, as a trained therapist can provide you with personalized exercises and techniques to address any muscular imbalances or postural issues.

In summary, while an uneven rib cage can be concerning, it is often related to conditions such as scoliosis, muscular imbalances, or structural anomalies. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms and consult with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management. Taking proactive steps to improve your posture and strengthen your core can also be beneficial in addressing discomfort and promoting overall spinal health.

The lower part of my rib cage has not been flat for a long time (over 10 years). The right side appears normal, but the left side is protruding (it's visibly noticeable that the two sides are different). Is there any way to improve this? Thank you!

Dr. Luo Xianyi reply Plastic Surgery
Some individuals may have an uneven lower rib margin due to a congenital structural issue. Generally, no treatment is necessary unless the asymmetry is significant, in which case partial rib resection may be required for correction.
