There is a hard lump in the armpit?
About two to three years ago, I started noticing a lump that appears under my armpit after shaving my underarm hair.
It doesn't happen every time, but it occurs approximately once every few months.
It is painful to the touch, feels hard, has a clear boundary from surrounding areas, and is about one centimeter in diameter.
It cannot be pushed around.

It seems to be localized skin inflammation or folliculitis caused by shaving; it is recommended to simply observe it.

Understanding painful hard lumps in the armpit can be concerning, especially when they appear intermittently and are associated with discomfort. Based on your description, these lumps seem to arise after shaving your armpits, which could suggest a few potential causes.
1. Lymphadenopathy: One of the most common reasons for hard lumps in the armpit is swollen lymph nodes. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in your immune response, and lymph nodes can become enlarged due to infections, inflammation, or other medical conditions. If you have had any recent infections, such as a cold or skin infection, this could explain the swelling. Lymph nodes can feel firm and tender when they are reacting to an infection.
2. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacterial infection, irritation, or ingrown hairs. After shaving, the hair follicles can become irritated, leading to painful lumps. These lumps may feel hard and can be tender to the touch. If you notice that these lumps appear consistently after shaving, it might be worth considering changing your shaving technique or using a different method, such as hair removal creams or laser hair removal.
3. Cysts: Sebaceous cysts can also form in the armpit area. These are non-cancerous lumps that can develop when a hair follicle or oil gland becomes blocked. They can feel firm and may be painful if they become inflamed or infected. Cysts can vary in size and may require medical evaluation if they become bothersome.
4. Lipomas: These are benign tumors made of fat tissue that can occur anywhere on the body, including the armpit. They are usually soft, movable, and painless, but in some cases, they can become tender or painful, especially if they press on surrounding tissues.
5. Infections: Skin infections, such as abscesses, can also present as painful lumps. If the lump is red, warm to the touch, or accompanied by fever, it may indicate an infection that requires medical attention.
Given that these lumps are painful and have a distinct border, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend imaging studies or a biopsy to determine the exact nature of the lump.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
- Avoid shaving the area until you have consulted a doctor, as this may exacerbate irritation or infection.
- Maintain good hygiene in the armpit area to reduce the risk of infections.
- Apply warm compresses to the area if you experience pain, as this can help reduce discomfort and promote drainage if there is an underlying infection.
In conclusion, while painful hard lumps in the armpit can arise from various causes, it is essential to seek medical advice for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and provide peace of mind regarding your health.
