Post-abortion care
Hello doctor, I underwent a surgical abortion on June 30th, and I stopped bleeding by July 10th.
However, on July 15th, I started bleeding again, and the amount of blood is even more than during the abortion.
I consulted with an obstetrician, and they said everything is fine.
Could you please help me understand what might be happening? Thank you.

Post-abortion bleeding can be a concerning issue for many women, especially when it deviates from what is considered normal. After an abortion, it is common for women to experience some bleeding as the body begins to heal and return to its pre-pregnancy state. However, the nature and duration of this bleeding can vary significantly from person to person.
In your case, you experienced bleeding after your abortion on June 30, which ceased by July 10. The return of bleeding on July 15, particularly if it is heavier than what you experienced during the abortion, warrants further investigation. Here are some potential explanations for your symptoms:
1. Retained Products of Conception: One of the most common reasons for post-abortion bleeding is the retention of placental tissue or other products of conception in the uterus. This can lead to continued bleeding as the body attempts to expel these retained tissues. An ultrasound may be necessary to determine if this is the case.
2. Hormonal Changes: After an abortion, your hormone levels can fluctuate significantly. These hormonal changes can sometimes lead to irregular bleeding patterns, including heavier bleeding. It is essential to monitor how long this bleeding lasts and its intensity.
3. Infection: Although less common, an infection can occur after an abortion, leading to abnormal bleeding. Symptoms of infection may include fever, foul-smelling discharge, or severe abdominal pain. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
4. Uterine Atony: This condition occurs when the uterus does not contract effectively after the abortion, which can lead to excessive bleeding. This is more common in cases of surgical abortion.
5. Menstrual Cycle Resumption: It is also possible that your menstrual cycle is simply resuming, and the bleeding you are experiencing is an early period. However, if the bleeding is significantly heavier than your typical menstrual flow, it is worth discussing with your healthcare provider.
Given that you have already consulted with a gynecologist who indicated that everything is fine, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion or request further evaluation, such as an ultrasound, to rule out any complications. It is essential to advocate for your health and ensure that any concerns you have are addressed adequately.
In the meantime, here are some steps you can take:
- Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of the amount of bleeding, any associated pain, and other symptoms. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
- Rest and Hydrate: Ensure you are taking care of yourself by resting and staying hydrated, as this can aid in your recovery.
- Follow-Up Appointments: If the bleeding continues or worsens, do not hesitate to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In conclusion, while some post-abortion bleeding is normal, significant changes in bleeding patterns should not be ignored. It is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your concerns and ensure you receive the appropriate care. Your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking clarity on your symptoms is a vital step in your recovery process.
