Herpes issues?
Hello, Doctor: I have an issue with herpes simplex virus type 1, which is occurring in the genital area.
I have seen both urologists and dermatologists in Western medicine, and my symptoms have improved.
However, both the urologists and dermatologists have stated that herpes cannot be cured.
I found information online suggesting that traditional Chinese medicine can cure herpes.
I would like to ask if this is correct.
Thank you.
JJ, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/07/25
Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Hello JJ,
If by "curing herpes" you mean that you will never have herpes simplex virus type 1 again in your lifetime, that is not possible.
When you are overly tired, stressed, or have irregular sleep patterns, it is very easy for the virus to reactivate.
It is important to take care of your health, maintain a good routine, and have a balanced diet to prevent herpes simplex virus type 1 from recurring.
Wishing you peace and good health!
Sincerely,
Yen Su-Mei, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nantou Hospital

Genital herpes, primarily caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), is a chronic condition that currently has no cure in Western medicine. The focus of treatment is typically on managing symptoms and reducing the frequency of outbreaks through antiviral medications. While some patients may seek alternative treatments, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is essential to approach these options with a clear understanding of their efficacy and limitations.
In TCM, the treatment of genital herpes may involve a holistic approach that aims to balance the body's internal systems. Practitioners may use herbal remedies, acupuncture, and dietary recommendations to strengthen the immune system and alleviate symptoms. Some commonly used herbs in TCM for viral infections include honeysuckle flower (Jin Yin Hua), forsythia fruit (Lian Qiao), and licorice root (Gan Cao). These herbs are believed to have antiviral properties and may help in reducing inflammation and promoting healing.
However, it is crucial to note that while TCM can provide symptomatic relief and support overall health, it does not "cure" herpes in the way that some claims suggest. The herpes virus remains dormant in the body after the initial infection, and while TCM may help manage outbreaks and improve the immune response, it cannot eliminate the virus entirely. Therefore, any claims of a complete cure for genital herpes through TCM should be approached with skepticism.
Moreover, the effectiveness of TCM treatments can vary significantly among individuals. Factors such as the severity of the condition, the individual's overall health, and the specific TCM approach used can all influence outcomes. It is advisable to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner who can provide a personalized treatment plan based on a thorough assessment of your condition.
In addition to seeking TCM treatment, it is essential to continue following the advice of your Western medical providers. Antiviral medications can help reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks, and practicing safe sex can help prevent transmission to partners.
In conclusion, while TCM may offer supportive care for managing genital herpes symptoms, it should not be viewed as a definitive cure. A comprehensive approach that includes both Western and alternative treatments, along with lifestyle modifications, may provide the best outcomes for individuals living with genital herpes. Always consult with healthcare professionals before starting any new treatment regimen, whether it be Western or traditional medicine, to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your specific health needs.
