The vaginal opening appears white (like water-soaked tissue)?
A few days ago, I looked in the mirror and noticed a ring of white tissue around the vaginal opening that looks like skin that has been soaked in water.
It doesn't hurt or itch.
Is this normal? It wasn't this color before, so should I see a gynecologist for an examination? (About a year ago, I had a yeast infection and urethritis, but there have been no recurrences since then.) I've been swimming every day recently; could this be the cause?

The observation of white discoloration around the vaginal opening can be concerning, especially if it is a new development. However, it is important to understand that variations in the appearance of the vulvar area can occur for a variety of reasons, many of which are benign.
From your description, the white discoloration resembles skin that has been submerged in water for an extended period, and you report that it is not accompanied by pain or itching. This is a positive sign, as the absence of discomfort often indicates that there may not be an underlying infection or significant irritation.
The skin around the vaginal area can change due to several factors, including hormonal fluctuations, moisture exposure, and even friction from clothing or activities such as swimming. Chlorinated water in swimming pools can also affect the skin, potentially leading to temporary changes in color or texture.
In your case, since you mentioned a history of yeast infections and urethritis, it is understandable to be vigilant about any changes in your genital area. Yeast infections can cause changes in discharge and skin appearance, but if you are not experiencing any symptoms such as itching, burning, or unusual discharge, it may not be a cause for immediate concern.
However, it is still advisable to monitor the situation. If the white discoloration persists, changes in texture, or if you begin to experience any discomfort, it would be prudent to consult a gynecologist for a thorough examination. They can provide a proper assessment to rule out any potential infections or other conditions that may require treatment.
In terms of normal vaginal discharge, it is typically clear to white, odorless, and may vary in consistency throughout the menstrual cycle. If you notice any changes in your discharge, such as an unusual color, odor, or if it becomes clumpy, these could be signs of an infection that would warrant further investigation.
In summary, while the white discoloration you are observing may be normal, especially given the absence of other symptoms, it is essential to remain vigilant. Regular gynecological check-ups are important for maintaining reproductive health, particularly if you have a history of infections. If you have any doubts or if the condition changes, seeking medical advice is always the best course of action.
