Feeling of chest tightness?
Hello doctor, several years ago I had surgery for a pneumothorax.
Last night, I woke up in the middle of the night for unknown reasons, feeling chest tightness and nausea.
I feel cold when exposed to air conditioning or a fan, and I also have diarrhea.
I'm not sure if this is a recurrence.
Last night, I did a few push-ups, and recently I've been taking traditional Chinese medicine for the hot weather, which includes herbs for clearing heat.

Understanding chest tightness after pneumothorax surgery can be concerning, especially if you have a history of lung issues. Pneumothorax, which is the presence of air in the pleural space, can lead to various complications, and surgery is often required to resolve it. After such a procedure, patients may experience a range of symptoms, including chest tightness, which can be attributed to several factors.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that after pneumothorax surgery, the lungs and surrounding tissues may still be healing. This healing process can lead to sensations of tightness or discomfort in the chest. Additionally, if you have recently engaged in physical activity, such as push-ups, it could exacerbate any residual discomfort or tightness in your chest, especially if your body is not yet fully recovered from the surgery.
The symptoms you describe—waking up with chest tightness, nausea, and feeling cold—could be indicative of several issues. The tightness in your chest may be due to residual effects from the surgery, anxiety, or even a mild respiratory infection. The sensation of wanting to vomit could be related to anxiety or discomfort, and feeling cold could be a response to your body’s stress or a reaction to the environment, especially if you are using air conditioning or a fan.
Furthermore, the gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea, could be unrelated to your pneumothorax history but may indicate a separate issue, such as a viral infection or a reaction to any herbal medications you are taking. Some herbal remedies can cause gastrointestinal upset, especially if they are meant to "clear heat" or detoxify the body.
Given your history of pneumothorax and the current symptoms, it is crucial to monitor your condition closely. If the chest tightness persists or worsens, or if you experience any new symptoms such as increased shortness of breath, fever, or significant changes in your bowel habits, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider may recommend imaging studies, such as a chest X-ray, to rule out any recurrence of pneumothorax or other complications.
In terms of managing your symptoms, consider the following:
1. Rest: Allow your body time to heal. Avoid strenuous activities that could strain your chest or lungs.
2. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough fluids, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea.
3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a record of your symptoms, including when they occur and their severity, to discuss with your healthcare provider.
4. Avoid Triggers: If you notice that certain activities or environmental factors (like air conditioning) exacerbate your symptoms, try to minimize exposure to them.
Lastly, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider, especially if you are taking herbal medications. They can provide guidance on whether these remedies are appropriate for your situation and if any adjustments to your treatment plan are necessary. Your health and well-being are paramount, and open communication with your healthcare team is essential for effective management of your symptoms.
