Dental cleaning after filling?

Hello Doctor, during my recent routine check-up, the dentist filled a cavity in my wisdom tooth and mentioned that there is some gum inflammation.
They only applied medication to the inflamed area and advised me to return for regular check-ups, but did not perform a teeth cleaning.
I would like to know if I should schedule another appointment for a cleaning, or if I can wait until my next check-up in six months.
Thank you.

Dear Ms.
CYW,
Hello! Basically, if there is localized inflammation in the gums, local cleaning is sufficient.
If there is inflammation in both the upper and lower gums, a full mouth cleaning may be performed (once every six months).
Take care! Wishing you peace and success!
Sincerely,
Dr.

After having a cavity filled, especially in the case of a wisdom tooth, it is essential to consider the overall health of your teeth and gums. While your dentist has treated the cavity and noted some gum inflammation, the decision to schedule a dental cleaning should be based on several factors.

First, it’s important to understand that dental cleanings are not just about removing plaque and tartar; they also play a crucial role in preventing gum disease and maintaining oral health. If your dentist has identified inflammation in your gums, this could be a sign of gingivitis or early periodontal disease, which may require more immediate attention than a standard six-month check-up.

In your case, since the dentist only applied medication to the inflamed area and did not perform a cleaning, it might be beneficial to schedule a dental cleaning sooner rather than later. This is particularly true if you have concerns about plaque buildup or if the inflammation persists. Regular cleanings help to remove any tartar that may have formed, which can exacerbate gum issues if left untreated.
Moreover, if you are experiencing any discomfort, bleeding, or persistent inflammation, it is advisable to seek a follow-up appointment. These symptoms could indicate that the inflammation is not resolving on its own and may require further intervention.
In general, dental professionals recommend that patients with gum inflammation should have their teeth cleaned more frequently than those without such issues. This could mean scheduling a cleaning every three to four months instead of the typical six-month interval.
Additionally, maintaining good oral hygiene at home is crucial. This includes brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and possibly using an antibacterial mouthwash to help reduce plaque and bacteria in your mouth.
In summary, while it may be tempting to wait until your next scheduled check-up in six months, given the circumstances of your recent treatment and the noted gum inflammation, it would be prudent to schedule a dental cleaning sooner. This proactive approach can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly, thereby promoting better oral health and preventing more serious complications down the line. Always feel free to communicate openly with your dentist about your concerns and the best course of action for your specific situation.
