Combining Traditional and Western Medicine for Post-Laser Wart Treatment - Traditional Chinese Medicine

Is it feasible to combine traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine for the treatment of warts after laser surgery?

Hello Dr.
Hou, I underwent laser surgery for warts today at a Western medicine clinic.
Post-surgery, I only need to complete a three-month course of self-paid oral medication, use anti-inflammatory topical medication for three days, and return for regular follow-ups.
I am concerned about the risk of recurrence.
How can I minimize the recurrence rate? Is the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in reducing recurrence rates better than that of Western medicine? Or would a combined treatment approach of TCM and Western medicine after laser surgery for warts be more effective in reducing recurrence rates? Has TCM shown success in curing patients with warts? Additionally, I would like to know whether TCM treatment for this condition is self-paid or covered by health insurance.
I am looking for a TCM practitioner in Kaohsiung who accepts health insurance for follow-up treatments for warts.
Thank you.

Hello Mr.
Yang,
Your question is difficult for me to answer.
Currently, there is insufficient literature or evidence to directly address whether the combination of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine can reduce recurrence rates, or which aspect of either approach has a lower recurrence rate.
During my teacher's lectures, he would cite his personal successful cases of treatment without recurrence; however, I do not have such treatment experience and cannot provide an answer.

In TCM, if the condition is treated with scientifically formulated herbal medicine, most of it is covered by health insurance.
However, if it involves herbal pieces or topical medications, they are usually not covered.
I am not familiar with any physicians specializing in TCM dermatology or urology in Kaohsiung, so I cannot make any recommendations.
I suggest you search for physician introductions at various hospitals.

I hope these suggestions are helpful to you.
Wishing you peace and good health.
Sincerely,
Hou Yu-Chang

Combining Traditional and Western Medicine for Post-Laser Wart Treatment
Dear patient, it’s great to hear that you are actively seeking ways to manage your health after undergoing laser treatment for warts (commonly known as genital warts). Your concerns about recurrence are valid, as warts can sometimes return even after treatment. Let’s explore how both traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine can work together to minimize the chances of recurrence and promote healing.

Understanding Wart Recurrence
Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), and while laser treatment effectively removes visible warts, it does not eliminate the virus from the body. This means that there is always a possibility of recurrence, especially if the immune system is not functioning optimally. Factors such as stress, poor nutrition, and lack of sleep can weaken the immune response, making it easier for the virus to reactivate.

Role of Western Medicine
In your case, you are following a regimen that includes anti-inflammatory topical medications and oral medications. These are essential for managing inflammation and preventing infection post-surgery. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are crucial to monitor any signs of recurrence and to address them promptly.

Integrating Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine offers various approaches that may complement your Western treatment. TCM focuses on restoring balance within the body and enhancing the immune system. Here are some ways TCM might help:
1. Herbal Medicine: Certain herbs are believed to have antiviral properties and can help strengthen the immune system. For example, herbs like Astragalus (Huang Qi) and Licorice (Gan Cao) are often used in TCM to boost immunity.

2. Acupuncture: This practice may help reduce stress and promote overall well-being, which can indirectly support your immune system. Some studies suggest that acupuncture can enhance the body’s ability to fight off infections.

3. Dietary Adjustments: TCM emphasizes the importance of diet in maintaining health. Consuming foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly those that support immune function (like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains), can be beneficial.

Combining Treatments
Combining TCM with your current Western treatment may provide a synergistic effect, potentially lowering the recurrence rate of warts. However, it is essential to communicate with both your Western and TCM practitioners about your treatment plans. This ensures that there are no contraindications between the medications you are taking and any herbal remedies or treatments you may consider.

Efficacy of TCM in Treating Warts
While there are anecdotal reports of TCM successfully treating warts, scientific evidence is limited. Some patients have reported positive outcomes, but results can vary significantly from person to person. It’s crucial to approach TCM as a complementary therapy rather than a standalone treatment.

Insurance and Cost Considerations
Regarding your question about insurance coverage for TCM, it varies by region and specific insurance plans. In Taiwan, some TCM treatments may be covered under the National Health Insurance (NHI), but this typically depends on the diagnosis and the specific treatments provided. It would be best to consult with a local TCM practitioner or your insurance provider to determine what is covered.

Finding a TCM Practitioner
In Kaohsiung, you can search for licensed TCM practitioners who specialize in dermatological conditions or HPV-related treatments. It’s advisable to look for practitioners who have experience in treating warts and can provide a tailored approach to your post-laser care.

Conclusion
In summary, combining TCM with your current Western treatment may enhance your recovery and potentially reduce the recurrence of warts. Always consult with your healthcare providers before starting any new treatments to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your situation. By taking a holistic approach to your health, you can empower your body to heal and maintain balance. Wishing you the best in your recovery journey!
