Numbness in the lower lip?
Hello, I would like to ask about a recent issue I've been experiencing.
When I brush my teeth, I feel a tingling sensation in my left lip, and when I touch the skin on my left jaw, I also feel a tingling sensation.
Could you please explain what might be causing this? I previously visited a family medicine doctor who mentioned that it could be an infection of the trigeminal nerve.
I also consulted a dentist, and they confirmed that it is not a dental issue.
Thank you for your assistance.

Dr. Cai Zongzhang reply Neurology
Hello: Based on the symptoms mentioned, it is suspected to be a trigeminal nerve disorder.
It is recommended to consult a neurologist for examination and treatment.

Numbness in the lower lip, particularly when accompanied by sensations in the chin area, can be concerning and may arise from various underlying causes. Given your description of experiencing a tingling or numb sensation on the left side of your lip and chin, it is essential to consider several potential factors that could contribute to this condition.
One of the most common causes of numbness in the lower lip is related to the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V), which is responsible for sensation in the face. If this nerve is irritated or compressed, it can lead to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or pain. This irritation could result from several factors, including:
1. Infection or Inflammation: As your family physician suggested, an infection affecting the trigeminal nerve could lead to these symptoms. Conditions such as herpes zoster (shingles) can cause nerve irritation and result in numbness or tingling in the affected area.
2. Dental Issues: Although you mentioned that your dentist ruled out dental problems, it is worth noting that issues such as impacted wisdom teeth or infections in the jaw can sometimes affect the trigeminal nerve, leading to numbness.
3. Nerve Compression: Conditions such as a herniated disc in the cervical spine or tumors can compress nerves that innervate the facial region, leading to numbness in the lower lip and chin.
4. Neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy, which can be caused by diabetes, vitamin deficiencies (especially B12), or alcohol use, may also lead to numbness in various parts of the body, including the face.
5. Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Although less common, MS can cause sensory disturbances, including numbness in the face. This would typically be accompanied by other neurological symptoms.
6. Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): Sudden onset of numbness, especially if it is unilateral (affecting one side of the face), could indicate a stroke or TIA. This is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention.
Given that you have already consulted with both a family physician and a dentist, it may be beneficial to seek further evaluation from a neurologist. They can perform a thorough neurological examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an MRI, to assess for any structural issues or lesions affecting the trigeminal nerve.
In terms of management, the approach will depend on the underlying cause of the numbness. If an infection is confirmed, antiviral medications may be prescribed. If nerve compression is suspected, treatment options may include physical therapy, medications for nerve pain, or even surgical intervention in severe cases.
In the meantime, it is advisable to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any additional symptoms such as weakness, difficulty speaking, or changes in vision, seek immediate medical attention.
In conclusion, while numbness in the lower lip can arise from various benign causes, it is essential to rule out more serious conditions. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional, particularly a neurologist, will help determine the cause and appropriate treatment for your symptoms.
