Arrhythmia
During blood pressure measurement, I noticed that the irregular pulse wave indicator on the blood pressure monitor lit up recently (which was not present before).
During these episodes, my heart rate increases to around 80-90 beats per minute.
When I manually measure my pulse, I also find that the heartbeat is neither too fast nor too slow, but sometimes there are missed beats and irregular rhythms.
These episodes last about an hour before returning to normal.
Many of these occurrences happen after dinner (about two to three days a month).
I often experience severe bloating, and I'm unsure if it could be related.
I have been diagnosed with chronic gastritis and Helicobacter pylori after undergoing an endoscopy.
Additionally, I frequently feel my heartbeat in my neck after eating, and while my heart rate is normal, it feels very strong and uncomfortable.
Thank you, doctor, for your response.

Hello, it sounds like the symptoms may be caused by dysautonomia.
For palpitations, it is advisable to observe them first; if discomfort persists, you should visit a cardiology clinic for further evaluation.

More Info
Irregular heartbeats, also known as arrhythmias, can be concerning, especially when they present with symptoms such as palpitations, skipped beats, or changes in heart rate. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing episodes of increased heart rate (tachycardia) and irregular pulse, particularly after meals. Additionally, you mentioned having chronic gastritis and Helicobacter pylori infection, which could potentially contribute to your symptoms.
Understanding Irregular Heartbeats
1. Types of Arrhythmias: Arrhythmias can be classified into several types, including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and premature contractions (PACs or PVCs). The irregular pulse you are experiencing could be due to premature atrial contractions (PACs), which are common and often benign. However, if you are experiencing significant symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional.
2. Causes: There are numerous potential causes of irregular heartbeats, including:
- Electrolyte Imbalances: Low levels of potassium, magnesium, or calcium can affect heart rhythm.
- Stimulants: Caffeine, nicotine, and certain medications can lead to irregular heartbeats.
- Stress and Anxiety: Emotional stress can trigger episodes of palpitations or irregular heartbeats.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions like chronic gastritis can cause discomfort that may be perceived as heart-related symptoms. The vagus nerve, which runs from the brain to the abdomen, can be stimulated by gastrointestinal distress, potentially affecting heart rhythm.
- Structural Heart Issues: While less likely in younger individuals without a history of heart disease, structural abnormalities can lead to arrhythmias.
3. Symptoms: You mentioned feeling your heart racing and experiencing a sensation of skipped beats. These symptoms can be alarming but are often benign. However, if you experience dizziness, fainting, or chest pain, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.
4. Monitoring and Diagnosis: Since you have already noticed irregularities while measuring your pulse and blood pressure, it would be beneficial to keep a log of your symptoms, including their frequency, duration, and any associated activities (like eating). This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider. A Holter monitor, which records your heart's activity over 24 hours or longer, may be recommended to capture these irregularities in real-time.
5. Management:
- Lifestyle Modifications: Reducing caffeine intake, managing stress through relaxation techniques, and ensuring adequate hydration can help mitigate symptoms.
- Dietary Considerations: Since you have chronic gastritis, it may be beneficial to follow a diet that minimizes irritation to your stomach lining, which could, in turn, help reduce vagal stimulation and its effects on your heart.
- Medication: If your symptoms are frequent and bothersome, your doctor may consider prescribing medications to help regulate your heart rhythm or address any underlying conditions.
6. When to Seek Help: If your symptoms worsen or if you experience new symptoms such as severe chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention.
In conclusion, while irregular heartbeats can be concerning, many cases are benign and manageable with lifestyle changes and monitoring. Given your history of chronic gastritis and the symptoms you described, it would be prudent to discuss these findings with your healthcare provider, who may recommend further evaluation or treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
