What conditions can cause pain in the lower left abdomen?

Doctor, I started experiencing dull pain in the left side of my abdomen near the navel after lunch on August 11.
The same dull pain occurred again the following day after lunch, and it has continued today.
Additionally, my stool on August 11 was small and shiny, but there was no blood.
The day before, on August 10, my stool was initially thick and then thin, also without any blood.
The amount of stool during those days was not much, but the bowel movements were relatively smooth.
Could you please tell me what condition this might indicate?

Hi: A 21-year-old male presents with left lower abdominal pain.
After eating, he experiences dull pain to the left of the umbilicus.
The stool volume is small but regular.
Possible causes include dyspepsia, gastrointestinal dysfunction, or gastroenteritis.
It is advised to pay attention to dietary habits and hygiene, and to stay adequately hydrated during the summer.
If symptoms persist, it is recommended to visit an outpatient clinic to check for any gastrointestinal or urinary tract issues.
Wishing you safety and health! Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding left lower abdominal pain can be quite complex, as it can stem from various underlying conditions. Based on your description, the pain occurs after meals, particularly after lunch, and is characterized as a dull ache. Additionally, you mentioned changes in your bowel movements, including small, shiny stools, which could indicate a few potential issues.

Firstly, it’s important to consider gastrointestinal causes. The left lower abdomen is home to parts of the colon, including the descending colon and sigmoid colon. Conditions such as diverticulitis, which is the inflammation of small pouches that can form in the walls of the colon, could lead to localized pain, especially after eating. This is often accompanied by changes in bowel habits, such as constipation or diarrhea, and sometimes can present with a feeling of fullness or discomfort after meals.

Another possibility is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a functional gastrointestinal disorder that can cause abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. Symptoms often worsen after eating, and stress or anxiety can exacerbate these symptoms. Given that you have mentioned experiencing abdominal pain specifically after meals, this could be a contributing factor.

Your description of the stool being small and shiny could suggest a lack of fiber in your diet, which can lead to constipation. When stool is hard and difficult to pass, it can cause discomfort and pain in the abdomen. Increasing dietary fiber through fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help improve bowel regularity and may alleviate some of the discomfort you are experiencing.

Additionally, it’s crucial to consider the possibility of a urinary tract issue, especially if the pain is accompanied by any changes in urination. Conditions such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or kidney stones can sometimes present with abdominal pain, particularly in the lower regions.

Given the duration and nature of your symptoms, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan, to rule out any serious conditions. Blood tests may also be necessary to check for signs of infection or inflammation.

In summary, while there are several potential causes for your left lower abdominal pain, including gastrointestinal issues like diverticulitis or IBS, dietary factors, and possibly urinary tract concerns, a comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare provider is essential. They can provide a more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific symptoms and medical history. It’s important not to ignore these symptoms, especially if they persist or worsen, as early intervention can lead to better outcomes.
