Car accident injuries?

I was in a car accident yesterday.
Initially, I assessed my injuries and found that my calf was hurt, but I still went to the emergency room for an X-ray.
The doctor said there was nothing serious and prescribed anti-inflammatory medication.
However, last night my right shoulder started to feel sore and appeared slightly swollen, and when I press on the right side of my neck, it also feels tender.
I'm not sure which specialist I should see.

After a car accident, it's crucial to address any injuries promptly and appropriately. Given your symptoms of right shoulder pain, mild swelling, and neck discomfort, it would be advisable to consult with a specialist who can thoroughly evaluate your condition.
In your case, the best course of action would be to see an orthopedic specialist. Orthopedic doctors specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, which include bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Since you mentioned that your X-ray showed no fractures but you are experiencing pain and swelling, an orthopedic evaluation can help determine if there are any soft tissue injuries, such as sprains, strains, or even potential rotator cuff injuries in the shoulder.

Additionally, considering the neck pain you described, it may also be beneficial to consult a neurologist or a spine specialist. Whiplash is a common injury in car accidents, which can lead to neck pain and discomfort. A neurologist can assess any potential nerve involvement or other neurological issues that may arise from the accident.

Here are some steps you can take to ensure you receive the appropriate care:
1. Follow-Up Appointment: Schedule an appointment with an orthopedic specialist as soon as possible. Bring your X-ray results and any other medical records related to your accident. The doctor may recommend further imaging, such as an MRI, to assess soft tissue injuries that X-rays cannot detect.

2. Physical Therapy: Depending on the findings from your orthopedic evaluation, the doctor may recommend physical therapy. Physical therapists can help you regain strength and mobility in your shoulder and neck, which is essential for recovery.

3. Pain Management: Discuss your pain levels with your doctor. They may prescribe pain relief medications or anti-inflammatory drugs to help manage your symptoms.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms. If you experience increased pain, swelling, or any new symptoms such as numbness or tingling, seek medical attention immediately.

5. Consider a Neurologist: If your neck pain persists or worsens, or if you experience headaches, dizziness, or other neurological symptoms, consider seeing a neurologist for further evaluation.

6. Rest and Care: In the meantime, ensure you rest the affected areas and avoid any activities that exacerbate your pain. Applying ice to the swollen area can help reduce inflammation.

In summary, after a car accident, it is essential to seek the right medical attention based on your symptoms. An orthopedic specialist is a good starting point for your shoulder and leg injuries, while a neurologist may be necessary for your neck pain. Early intervention can help prevent long-term complications and facilitate a smoother recovery process.
