Pregnancy test timing
Hello doctor, I would like to inquire about my previous Pap smear, which showed signs of inflammation.
My last menstrual period started on July 10, and now it is August 21, and I still haven't gotten my period.
It seems to be a week late.
I took a pregnancy test today, but it wasn't with first morning urine; could that affect the result? The test showed one line.
My last sexual intercourse was on August 13, and there was ejaculation inside without a condom.
My period was expected around August 11.
Is it possible that I tested for pregnancy at the wrong time, or does this indicate that I am not pregnant? In the past few days, I have occasionally felt a dull ache in my lower abdomen.

For pregnancy concerns, please perform a home pregnancy test or consult a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology for evaluation four weeks after sexual intercourse.

When it comes to understanding pregnancy test timing and menstrual delays, there are several factors to consider. Based on your situation, you mentioned that your last menstrual period started on July 10, and you have not had a period since then, with a delay of about a week as of August 21. You also mentioned that you had unprotected intercourse on August 13 and that you tested for pregnancy, but the result was negative.
First, let's discuss the timing of your pregnancy test. The most reliable time to take a home pregnancy test is after a missed period. Since your menstrual cycle is typically regular, with your period expected around August 11, testing on August 21 is appropriate. However, the accuracy of the test can be influenced by several factors, including the timing of the test and the type of urine used. Morning urine is generally more concentrated and can provide more reliable results, especially in the early days of a missed period. If you tested later in the day, it might not have the same concentration of the pregnancy hormone (hCG), which could lead to a false negative result.
Regarding your menstrual delay, there are several potential reasons for a missed period aside from pregnancy. Stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and underlying health conditions can all affect your menstrual cycle. Given that you mentioned experiencing some abdominal discomfort, it could be related to premenstrual symptoms or other factors such as ovulation or even stress, especially if you have been under pressure or experiencing changes in your routine.
Since you had unprotected intercourse on August 13, there is a possibility of pregnancy, but it is essential to consider that the timing of ovulation plays a crucial role. If you ovulated around the time of your last period, the likelihood of conception from intercourse on August 13 may be lower, especially if your cycle is typically regular. However, sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you ovulated shortly after that date, there is still a chance of pregnancy.
If you continue to experience a delay in your period, I recommend waiting a few more days and then taking another pregnancy test, preferably using first-morning urine for the best accuracy. If the test remains negative and your period does not arrive, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test to measure hCG levels, which can provide a more definitive answer regarding pregnancy. Additionally, they can evaluate other potential causes for your menstrual irregularity and abdominal discomfort.
In summary, while the negative pregnancy test suggests that you may not be pregnant, the timing of the test and the method used can significantly impact the results. If your period does not arrive soon, or if you have any concerning symptoms, seeking medical advice is the best course of action to ensure your health and well-being.
