Post-suture scalp and hair issues?

I hit a metal plate on August 13 and went to the hospital where they said I needed stitches and shaved a little bit of my hair.
I would like to ask the doctor if my hair will grow back? Will there be a scar at the wound site? Thank you.

Lin, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/08/21

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery

If the wound is deep enough to require sutures, it likely extends into the dermis, which will inevitably leave a scar.
The shaved hair will grow back, but the area of the wound may not necessarily do so.

When it comes to the question of whether hair will grow back after stitches on the scalp, the answer is generally positive. Hair follicles, which are responsible for hair growth, are typically not permanently damaged by the stitching process itself. If the injury is not severe enough to destroy the hair follicles, you can expect hair to regrow in the area where the stitches were placed. However, the regrowth may take some time, and the appearance of the hair may vary depending on several factors, including the extent of the injury, the healing process, and individual hair growth cycles.

After an injury to the scalp that requires stitches, the healing process involves several stages. Initially, the body will focus on closing the wound and preventing infection. During this time, the area may be swollen, and there may be some redness or tenderness. As the wound heals, the body will begin to regenerate tissue, which includes the hair follicles. Typically, hair begins to regrow within a few months, but it can take up to a year for the hair to fully return to its original density and appearance.

Regarding scarring, it is common for stitches to leave a scar, especially if the injury was deep or if the skin was significantly damaged. The appearance of the scar can depend on various factors, including the individual's skin type, the location of the injury, and how well the wound was cared for during the healing process. Scars may fade over time, but they may not completely disappear. There are treatments available, such as silicone gel sheets, topical treatments, and laser therapy, that can help improve the appearance of scars.

To promote optimal healing and hair regrowth, it is essential to follow your doctor's post-operative care instructions. This may include keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding sun exposure, and not picking at scabs. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support hair growth. Nutrients such as biotin, zinc, and vitamins A, C, D, and E are particularly beneficial for hair health.

If you notice any unusual changes in the area, such as excessive redness, swelling, or discharge, or if you have concerns about the healing process, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider. They can assess the wound and provide guidance on any necessary treatments or interventions.

In summary, while hair typically grows back after stitches on the scalp, the extent and speed of regrowth can vary. Scarring is a common outcome, but there are ways to manage and improve the appearance of scars. Following proper care instructions and consulting with a healthcare professional can help ensure the best possible outcome for both hair regrowth and scar healing.
