Epididymitis is a concerning issue?
Since July 30, I have been experiencing a dull pain in my testicles, along with tenderness in my lower abdomen.
At first, I thought I was overthinking it, but the pain has become more pronounced.
On August 4, I visited the urology department at Taipei Medical University Hospital, where the doctor confirmed that I have epididymitis after a physical examination.
I was prescribed antibiotics, and even as of today (August 27), I still have pain, and the lymph nodes near my pubic area are also painful.
I would like to ask the doctor how long I need to continue taking the medication before I can expect a reduction in pain and inflammation.
I have read online that treatment for epididymitis may require six weeks or more of antibiotics.
Should I consider seeing a higher-level hospital (such as Veterans General Hospital) for further evaluation? I would appreciate your advice.

Hello: Taipei Medical University Hospital is quite large.
During follow-up visits, it's important to report whether there has been any improvement in symptoms after medication.
Generally, for conditions requiring long-term medication, prescriptions are given for one week at a time, and follow-up appointments are scheduled to assess progress.
Based on personal experience, a treatment duration of at least 2 to 6 weeks is recommended.
It is advised to communicate any changes during follow-up visits, especially if there is swelling of the testicles or epididymis, or if fever occurs, as these require immediate medical attention.
Attention to lifestyle is also important to ensure effective treatment.
Wishing you good health.

Epididymitis, an inflammation of the epididymis, can be a painful condition that often requires antibiotic treatment. The duration of antibiotic therapy typically depends on the underlying cause of the infection, which can be bacterial, viral, or due to other factors such as trauma or autoimmune conditions. In most cases, if the epididymitis is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics are prescribed for a duration of 10 to 14 days. However, in cases of chronic epididymitis or when the infection is more severe, treatment may extend to six weeks or longer.
In your case, since you began experiencing symptoms on July 30 and have been on antibiotics since your visit to the urology department on August 4, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you are still experiencing pain and discomfort after nearly a month of treatment, it may indicate that the infection has not fully resolved or that there may be another underlying issue contributing to your symptoms.
The presence of pain in the lymph nodes near the pubic area could suggest that the infection has spread or that there is a secondary infection or inflammation occurring. It is crucial to communicate these ongoing symptoms to your healthcare provider. They may consider performing further evaluations, such as imaging studies (like an ultrasound) or laboratory tests, to assess the situation more thoroughly.
Regarding your concern about whether to seek care at a higher-level hospital, such as a veterans' hospital, it could be beneficial if you feel that your current treatment is not adequately addressing your symptoms. A referral to a specialist or a more comprehensive evaluation may provide additional insights and treatment options.
In summary, while the standard treatment duration for epididymitis is typically 10 to 14 days, chronic cases may require longer courses of antibiotics. If symptoms persist beyond this timeframe, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider for further assessment and potential adjustment of your treatment plan. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare team to ensure that you receive the best possible care for your condition.
