Will White Spots in Throat from Tonsillitis Disappear on Their Own? - Otolaryngology

Share to:

Tonsillitis with white spots in the back of the throat may resolve on its own. However, it is important to monitor symptoms and consult a healthcare professional if they worsen or persist?

Hello Doctor, I have recently been diagnosed with acute tonsillitis and am currently taking antibiotics.
This afternoon, I looked in the mirror and noticed that the right side of my throat, which was supposed to be healing, now has white spots similar to the left side.
Could you please tell me if these white spots are a sign of inflammation? Will these white areas on the tonsils (on both sides of the throat) resolve on their own? I am also confused as to why white spots have appeared on the right side of my throat again after it seemed to be recovering.
Thank you!

Mr. Gao, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/08/28

Dr. Ji Zhaoyun reply Otolaryngology

Hello, it could be a tonsil ulcer or tonsil stones.
It is advisable to consult an otolaryngologist if the symptoms persist.
Wishing you good health and safety.

The presence of white spots in the throat, particularly in the context of tonsillitis, is a common concern. These white spots can be indicative of several conditions, primarily related to inflammation or infection. In your case, since you are currently undergoing treatment with antibiotics for acute tonsillitis, it is essential to understand the nature of these white spots and their potential to resolve on their own.

Firstly, the white spots you are observing are likely related to the inflammatory response of the tonsils. When the tonsils become infected, they can develop pus-filled pockets or patches of dead cells and bacteria, which appear as white spots. This is a typical manifestation of tonsillitis, and it is not uncommon for these spots to persist even as other symptoms improve.
In many cases, these white spots will gradually disappear as the underlying infection resolves. Antibiotics are effective in treating bacterial infections, and if your tonsillitis is indeed bacterial, you should start to see improvement within a few days of starting your medication. However, it is essential to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if you start feeling better before finishing the medication. Stopping antibiotics prematurely can lead to a resurgence of the infection or contribute to antibiotic resistance.

It is also worth noting that if the white spots do not begin to resolve after a few days of antibiotic treatment, or if you experience worsening symptoms such as increased pain, fever, or difficulty swallowing, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to reassess your condition, possibly perform a throat culture to determine if a different pathogen is involved, or consider other treatment options.

In summary, while the white spots in your throat due to tonsillitis may resolve on their own as the infection improves, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have concerns about the persistence of these spots or any new symptoms, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice. Your health and recovery are paramount, and your healthcare provider can offer the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
