Small lump behind the ear and on the shoulder?
Hello, doctor! Last Monday, I discovered a lump near my earlobe and another one near my neck on the left shoulder.
Both lumps are about 1 cm in diameter (as measured by my family) and are painful when pressed.
The one on my left shoulder has a reddish color, while the one on my ear is normal skin color.
They have been present for about a week now, but there seems to be no signs of resolution.
My family thinks it's a pimple, but I am really worried.
Could you please provide me with an answer?

Hello! My family says it's acne.
If you don't believe it, you can only consult a general surgeon or dermatologist for an answer! I apologize for not being able to provide a remote consultation.
Wishing you health and happiness.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the painful lumps you've discovered behind your ear and on your shoulder. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing two distinct lumps, each with different characteristics and locations.
The lump behind your ear, which is skin-colored and approximately 1 cm in size, could potentially be a lymph node, a sebaceous cyst, or even a small abscess. Lymph nodes can become swollen due to various reasons, including infections, inflammation, or even systemic conditions. Given that it is painful upon pressure, this could indicate that the lymph node is reacting to an infection or inflammation in the surrounding area.
On the other hand, the lump on your shoulder, which is red and also about 1 cm in size, raises additional considerations. The redness suggests that there may be some inflammation or infection present. This could be a result of a localized skin infection, such as folliculitis or a more significant abscess. It is also possible that this lump is a dermatological issue, such as a cyst or a benign tumor, but the redness and pain are concerning and warrant further evaluation.
Both lumps persisting for a week without any signs of improvement could indicate that they require medical attention. While your family suggested that these could be acne-related, the characteristics you've described—especially the pain and the redness—suggest that they may be more than just simple pimples.
In terms of next steps, I would recommend scheduling an appointment with a healthcare provider, preferably a dermatologist or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies if necessary, to determine the exact nature of these lumps. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment options may vary. If they are indeed infected, antibiotics may be required. If they are cysts or other benign growths, they might need to be drained or removed.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to manage discomfort:
1. Avoid squeezing or picking at the lumps, as this can exacerbate inflammation or lead to infection.
2. Apply a warm compress to the area for 10-15 minutes several times a day. This can help reduce pain and promote drainage if there is an underlying infection.
3. Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage pain and reduce inflammation.
4. Monitor for any changes in size, color, or pain level. If you notice any significant changes, seek medical attention promptly.
In conclusion, while it is understandable to feel anxious about these lumps, many conditions can cause similar symptoms, and many are treatable. Seeking professional medical advice is the best course of action to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Take care, and I hope you find relief soon!
