Nasal issues
Hello doctor, I suddenly felt a foreign body sensation in my nose at night.
It felt itchy, and even after sneezing, nothing came out.
Later, I noticed that the area on the right side of my nose felt very itchy, deep inside the nasal passage.
I couldn't see anything with a mirror.
Is it possible that an insect has gotten in there?

Hello: It is common for itching to be caused by nasal allergies or inflammation, and the likelihood of foreign objects entering the nasal cavity is low.
If you are concerned, it is advisable to visit an otolaryngologist for an examination.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Experiencing unexplained nasal discomfort can be quite alarming, especially when accompanied by sensations of itching or the feeling of an object lodged deep within the nasal passages. While it is possible for insects or foreign bodies to enter the nasal cavity, such occurrences are relatively rare. However, it is essential to consider various potential causes for your symptoms.
Firstly, the sensation of itching or discomfort in the nose can be attributed to several factors, including allergies, nasal infections, or even irritants in the environment. Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, can cause symptoms such as nasal itching, sneezing, and congestion. If you have a history of allergies, this could be a plausible explanation for your discomfort.
In some cases, nasal polyps or other benign growths can develop within the nasal passages, leading to similar sensations. These growths are typically non-cancerous but can cause discomfort and obstruct airflow. If you have had a history of nasal issues, such as chronic sinusitis or frequent nasal congestion, it may be worthwhile to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for a thorough examination.
Regarding the concern about an insect being lodged in the nasal cavity, while it is not impossible, it is quite uncommon. If an insect were to enter the nose, it would likely cause immediate discomfort and possibly trigger a reflexive response, such as sneezing or coughing, to expel it. If you have not experienced any significant trauma to the nose or exposure to environments where insects are prevalent, the likelihood of this scenario is low.
If you are experiencing persistent discomfort, it is advisable to seek medical attention. An ENT specialist can perform a nasal endoscopy, a procedure that allows for a detailed examination of the nasal passages and sinuses. This procedure can help identify any foreign bodies, polyps, or other abnormalities that may be causing your symptoms. Additionally, the doctor can provide appropriate treatment options based on the findings.
In the meantime, avoid inserting any objects into your nose, as this can lead to further irritation or injury. If you suspect that allergies may be contributing to your symptoms, consider using over-the-counter antihistamines or nasal sprays to alleviate discomfort. However, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new medications.
In summary, while the sensation of having an insect or foreign body in the nose can be distressing, it is crucial to consider other potential causes of your symptoms. Seeking medical advice from an ENT specialist will provide clarity and help determine the appropriate course of action for your nasal discomfort. Remember, timely intervention can prevent complications and ensure your nasal health is maintained.
