The tongue is constantly being scraped or worn down?
My father had to redo his dentures due to discomfort, but after the remake, his tongue is constantly being irritated by the dentures.
He consulted an oral surgeon who mentioned that my father's alveolar bone is deformed but should not cause any irritation.
Other dentists he visited also stated that there shouldn't be any issues.
I would like to ask why my father's tongue is still being irritated despite the doctors saying there is no problem.

Dear Mr.
Vantar,
Hello! If there are no ulcers and only skin abrasions, it should not be a concern.
It is possible that your respected parent is experiencing tongue pain.
A more detailed examination is necessary.
Please take care! Wishing you all the best and smooth sailing!
Sincerely,
Director Huang Ting-Fang, Dentistry

The irritation of your father's tongue due to dentures can be a frustrating and painful issue, and it’s understandable to seek clarity on why this is happening despite multiple consultations with dental professionals. There are several potential reasons for this discomfort, and I will elaborate on them, as well as suggest possible solutions.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that dentures, especially if they are new or have been recently adjusted, can cause irritation to the tongue and surrounding oral tissues. This irritation can occur for several reasons:
1. Improper Fit: If the dentures do not fit properly, they can create pressure points that rub against the tongue. This is particularly common in cases where the shape of the jawbone has changed, as in your father's case with alveolar bone resorption. Even slight misalignments can lead to significant discomfort.
2. Material Sensitivity: Some individuals may have sensitivities or allergies to the materials used in dentures. If your father’s dentures are made from certain types of acrylic or other materials, this could potentially cause irritation.
3. Poor Oral Hygiene: If the dentures are not cleaned properly, bacteria can build up, leading to infections or irritations in the mouth, including on the tongue. It’s crucial to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular cleaning of the dentures and the mouth.
4. Tissue Adaptation: When new dentures are placed, the oral tissues, including the tongue, may need time to adapt to the new appliance. During this adaptation period, irritation can occur.
5. Underlying Medical Conditions: Conditions such as diabetes, which your father has, can affect healing and tissue health in the mouth. This could exacerbate any irritation caused by the dentures.
6. Neurological Factors: If there are any neurological issues affecting sensation in the mouth, this could lead to an exaggerated perception of irritation or discomfort.
Given that multiple dental professionals have assessed your father and indicated that there should not be any significant issues, it may be beneficial to consider the following steps:
- Seek a Specialist: If the irritation persists, it may be worthwhile to consult a prosthodontist, a dentist who specializes in the design and fitting of dentures. They can provide a more detailed assessment of the fit and function of the dentures.
- Adjustments: Regular follow-up appointments for adjustments are crucial. Sometimes, even minor adjustments can significantly improve comfort.
- Oral Hygiene: Ensure that your father is following a strict oral hygiene routine. This includes cleaning the dentures daily and rinsing the mouth with water or a non-alcoholic mouthwash after meals.
- Soft Diet: If the irritation is severe, a soft diet may help reduce discomfort while eating.
- Medication: Over-the-counter topical anesthetics may provide temporary relief from irritation. However, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider before using any medication.
- Consider Replacement: If the current dentures are consistently causing problems, it may be worth discussing the possibility of a different type of denture or even a different material that may be more comfortable for your father.
In conclusion, while it can be perplexing that multiple dental professionals have not identified a clear cause for your father's tongue irritation, it is essential to continue seeking solutions. The discomfort could stem from a combination of factors, including fit, material sensitivity, and oral hygiene practices. By working closely with dental specialists and ensuring proper care, it is possible to alleviate the irritation and improve your father's quality of life.
