Sudden decrease in urine output and shortness of breath?

Around August 25th, I noticed that my urine output suddenly decreased significantly, going to the bathroom only four to five times a day, and each time it was very little.
I was drinking about the same amount of water as usual.
Since then, I've been feeling dizzy every day and often fatigued.
When I get up from a chair, my vision goes dark, and I sometimes feel a bit unsteady.
A week ago, I visited my primary care clinic, where they used a test strip to check my urine.
It showed the presence of bacteria and blood (along with other tests that I don't quite understand).
They diagnosed me with a urinary tract infection and advised me to drink more water, prescribing a week-long course of antibiotics.
My urine output has increased a bit; during the day, I go to the bathroom approximately every two to three hours, and at night, about once an hour.
However, today I have noticeably experienced shortness of breath.
Could this be a kidney issue?

Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a concerning set of symptoms, including a sudden decrease in urine output, shortness of breath, fatigue, and dizziness. These symptoms can indeed be indicative of a potential kidney issue, among other health concerns.

Firstly, a significant reduction in urine output, known as oliguria, can be caused by various factors, including dehydration, urinary tract infections (UTIs), or more serious conditions like acute kidney injury (AKI). In your case, the presence of bacteria and blood in your urine suggests a urinary tract infection, which can lead to inflammation and irritation of the bladder and urinary tract. The antibiotics prescribed by your doctor are aimed at treating this infection, and it is common for urine output to improve as the infection resolves.

However, the fact that you are experiencing shortness of breath is particularly concerning. Shortness of breath can occur for several reasons, including fluid overload, which can happen if the kidneys are not functioning properly and are unable to excrete excess fluid. This can lead to pulmonary edema, where fluid accumulates in the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing. Additionally, if there is an underlying kidney issue, such as acute kidney injury or chronic kidney disease, it can lead to an accumulation of waste products in the blood, which can also contribute to respiratory symptoms.

Your symptoms of dizziness and feeling faint when standing up could be related to dehydration or low blood pressure, which can occur with reduced fluid intake or significant fluid loss. It is crucial to monitor these symptoms closely, as they can indicate a more serious underlying condition.

Given your recent history of decreased urine output and the new onset of shortness of breath, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider will likely perform a thorough evaluation, including blood tests to assess kidney function (such as serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels), electrolyte levels, and possibly imaging studies to evaluate the kidneys and urinary tract.
In terms of kidney health, it is important to consider your overall hydration status, dietary habits, and any underlying health conditions that may affect kidney function. Maintaining adequate hydration is crucial, especially when experiencing symptoms of infection. Additionally, if you have any pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, these can significantly impact kidney health and should be managed appropriately.

In summary, while your symptoms may initially suggest a urinary tract infection, the combination of decreased urine output and shortness of breath warrants further investigation to rule out any potential kidney issues. Please consult with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to ensure a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management of your symptoms. Your health and well-being are paramount, and timely medical intervention can make a significant difference in outcomes.
