Pregnancy issues
Hello, I would like to ask about my menstrual cycle.
My period started on August 3, with a cycle of about 4 weeks.
I had unprotected intercourse on August 17 and took the morning-after pill on August 18.
I went for an ultrasound on September 14 and found out that I was already 6 weeks along.
I would like to know if conception likely occurred on August 17.
A, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/09/14
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, based on your description, it is possible that it could occur on that day; however, there may still be a few days of variance.
If intercourse also took place a few days before or after, that could also be a possibility.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

More Info
Understanding the timing of conception can be quite complex, especially when considering factors such as menstrual cycles, ovulation, and the timing of intercourse. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down the situation to clarify when conception likely occurred.
1. Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation: You mentioned that your last menstrual period (LMP) started on August 3rd and that your cycle is approximately four weeks long. Typically, ovulation occurs about 14 days after the first day of your last menstrual period, which would place your ovulation around August 17th. This is a general guideline, as individual cycles can vary.
2. Timing of Intercourse: You indicated that unprotected intercourse occurred on August 17th. Given that this date aligns closely with your estimated ovulation, it is indeed plausible that conception could have occurred on this day. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you had intercourse on that day or a few days prior, it increases the likelihood of sperm being present when the egg is released.
3. Emergency Contraceptive Pill: You also mentioned taking an emergency contraceptive pill (commonly known as the "morning-after pill") on August 18th. These pills are most effective when taken shortly after unprotected intercourse and can significantly reduce the chances of pregnancy if taken within 72 hours. However, they are not 100% effective. If you were already pregnant at the time of taking the pill, it would not terminate the pregnancy but may cause some hormonal changes.
4. Ultrasound Findings: You stated that during your ultrasound on September 14th, it was determined that you were already six weeks pregnant. In terms of gestational age, this would typically mean that conception likely occurred around the time of ovulation, which supports the idea that August 17th could be the date of conception. The ultrasound measurements are used to estimate gestational age based on the size of the embryo or fetus, which can provide a more accurate assessment than relying solely on LMP.
5. Conclusion: Based on the timeline you've provided, it is reasonable to conclude that conception likely occurred around August 17th, especially considering your ovulation timing. However, it is important to remember that these calculations are estimates and can vary from person to person.
In summary, while the timing of your menstrual cycle and the events surrounding your intercourse suggest that August 17th is a likely date for conception, the presence of the emergency contraceptive pill adds a layer of complexity. If you have further concerns or questions about your pregnancy, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance. They can provide you with the most accurate information based on your specific circumstances and medical history.
