Pregnancy bleeding & implantation bleeding
I am currently 7 weeks pregnant.
On September 17, after using the restroom, I noticed brown, sticky discharge.
I visited a clinic, and the doctor mentioned there was a little bit of bleeding.
The doctor prescribed medication to support the pregnancy.
On September 19, I experienced the same brown, sticky discharge again after using the restroom, which lasted for about two days.
I went to the emergency room, and the doctor informed me that since I am still in the early stages of pregnancy, they couldn't perform an ultrasound.
They administered an injection to support the pregnancy and prescribed medication, advising me to return for a follow-up.
Is my baby at risk of miscarriage?

Dr. Huang Zifei reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dear Patty,
Early pregnancy can present various conditions, such as ectopic pregnancy or embryonic regression.
Since we have not yet confirmed a normal intrauterine pregnancy, it is advisable to visit an obstetrician-gynecologist for further discussion.

More Info
Implantation bleeding is a common occurrence in early pregnancy, typically occurring when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus. This process usually happens around 6 to 12 days after conception, which can coincide with the time a woman might expect her period. The bleeding is often light and can appear as brown or pink discharge, which is generally considered normal and not a cause for alarm.
In your case, at 7 weeks of pregnancy, experiencing brown, thick discharge can be concerning, but it is important to understand that many women experience some form of spotting or light bleeding during the early stages of pregnancy. As mentioned by your healthcare provider, this could be due to several benign reasons, such as implantation bleeding, cervical irritation, or hormonal changes. However, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely.
The administration of medications to support the pregnancy, such as progesterone (often referred to as "安胎藥" or "anti-miscarriage medication" in Chinese), is a common practice when there are signs of bleeding. These medications help maintain the uterine lining and support the early stages of pregnancy. The fact that your doctor has prescribed these medications indicates that they are taking your symptoms seriously and are trying to provide the best care for you and your baby.
Regarding the concern about whether the baby will be okay, it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider regularly. If the bleeding is light and there are no additional symptoms such as severe cramping or heavy bleeding, many women go on to have healthy pregnancies. However, if you experience any significant changes, such as increased bleeding, severe pain, or other concerning symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention.
In addition to monitoring your symptoms, it is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy. This includes a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, staying hydrated, and avoiding harmful substances such as alcohol and tobacco. If you have any pre-existing conditions, such as allergies or anemia, discuss with your healthcare provider how to manage these conditions safely during pregnancy.
Lastly, keep in mind that early pregnancy can be a time of uncertainty and anxiety. It is normal to have concerns about the health of your baby, especially if you are experiencing unusual symptoms. Open communication with your healthcare provider is key. They can provide reassurance, monitor your progress, and guide you through any necessary interventions to ensure the best possible outcome for you and your baby.
In summary, while implantation bleeding and light spotting can be common in early pregnancy, it is essential to stay vigilant and maintain regular check-ups with your healthcare provider. By doing so, you can help ensure the health and safety of both you and your developing baby.
