Irregular menstrual cycle
Hello doctor, my menstrual cycle has always been irregular.
Although I used traditional Chinese medicine to regulate it during middle school, it only helped to reduce the pain.
Generally, my period is delayed by 2-4 days and lasts for 4-5 days.
However, after turning 27, my cycle has become even more erratic; it either gets delayed by a week or comes a week early, or one month I have a light flow for 9 days, or I might have two periods in one month or none at all.
For example, this year, my period was from June 27 to July 1, but the next one started on August 18.
I was supposed to get it on September 18, but it was delayed until September 23.
Initially, I wasn't too concerned, but last night, September 24, it suddenly stopped flowing, and it hasn't been two days yet.
When I went to the bathroom, I noticed a faint pink color when I wiped, but the discharge has been mostly white.
Is this considered normal? On September 23, the first day of my period, I fell and twisted my ankle.
The next day, my family went to the pharmacy to get me some medication for the sprain, which I took at 8 PM.
After taking a shower around 10 PM, I noticed that the flow had significantly decreased.
Could this be a side effect of the medication? P.S.
I am single and have not had sexual intercourse for over 5 years.

Hello, the factors that can affect the menstrual cycle or cause intermenstrual bleeding are numerous, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraception, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, lesions of the uterus or cervix, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, among others.
It is recommended that if your symptoms persist or worsen, you should consult a gynecologist to check for hormonal imbalances or other underlying causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

Irregular menstrual cycles can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding the potential causes and implications is essential for maintaining reproductive health. Based on your description, it seems that your menstrual cycle has become increasingly unpredictable, with variations in timing and flow. This can be attributed to several factors, including hormonal imbalances, lifestyle changes, stress, and underlying medical conditions.
Firstly, hormonal fluctuations are a common cause of irregular menstrual cycles. The menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones, including estrogen and progesterone. Factors such as age, weight changes, and stress can disrupt this hormonal balance, leading to irregularities. For instance, as women approach their late 20s and early 30s, they may experience changes in their menstrual patterns due to shifts in hormone levels. Additionally, conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can lead to irregular cycles and should be considered, especially if you experience other symptoms like weight gain or acne.
Your mention of experiencing a sudden change in flow after taking medication for a sprained ankle raises the question of whether the medication could have influenced your menstrual cycle. Some medications, particularly those that affect hormonal levels, can lead to changes in menstrual patterns. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are commonly used for pain relief, can sometimes affect menstrual flow, but they typically do not cause significant alterations in cycle regularity. However, if you are concerned about the impact of any medication on your menstrual cycle, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice.
Stress is another significant factor that can affect menstrual cycles. Emotional or physical stress can lead to hormonal changes that may result in delayed or missed periods. Since you mentioned experiencing a fall, it is possible that the physical stress from the injury, combined with any emotional stress, could have contributed to the irregularity in your cycle.
In terms of the variations you described, such as having a period that lasts only a few days or experiencing a month with two periods, these can be considered abnormal if they deviate significantly from your typical cycle. While some variation is normal, particularly in younger women or those undergoing significant life changes, persistent irregularities warrant further investigation.
It is also important to consider lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and sleep patterns. Significant changes in weight, whether loss or gain, can impact menstrual regularity. High levels of physical activity or extreme dieting can also lead to irregular cycles.
Given the complexity of menstrual health, it is advisable to keep a detailed record of your menstrual cycle, including dates, flow intensity, and any accompanying symptoms. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing any underlying issues.
In conclusion, while occasional irregularities in menstrual cycles can be normal, persistent changes, especially those accompanied by other symptoms, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. They may recommend blood tests to check hormone levels or other diagnostic procedures to rule out conditions like PCOS or thyroid disorders. Your health and well-being are paramount, so do not hesitate to seek medical advice to address your concerns.
