Postoperative issues related to hemorrhoid surgery?

Hello, Dr.
Ko.
It's been a week since my hemorrhoid surgery, and I still have several lumps around my anus that feel like tumors, and they are very painful.
Is it possible that the surgery didn't remove everything? It also hurts a lot during bowel movements, and there is bleeding.
Is this normal? How much longer will it take for me to recover to normal?

Bmw, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/10/13

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery

Swelling of the wound after hemorrhoid surgery is a normal phenomenon and will typically return to normal in about 2 to 4 weeks.
Taking warm sitz baths can also be helpful.

After hemorrhoid surgery, it is common for patients to experience pain, swelling, and discomfort in the anal area. The presence of lumps or swellings around the anus, as you described, can be concerning, but it is not uncommon for patients to have some residual swelling or even small lumps after the procedure. These lumps may be due to the surgical site healing, inflammation, or even the formation of scar tissue.

Pain is also a typical symptom following hemorrhoid surgery. The surgical procedure can cause trauma to the surrounding tissues, leading to inflammation and discomfort. It is important to manage this pain effectively, as it can significantly impact your recovery and quality of life. Over-the-counter pain medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can be helpful, but your doctor may also prescribe stronger pain relief if necessary.

Bleeding can occur after hemorrhoid surgery, especially during bowel movements. This is often due to the irritation of the surgical site. If the bleeding is minimal and resolves quickly, it may not be a cause for concern. However, if you experience significant bleeding or if the bleeding persists, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

Regarding your question about whether the surgery was performed correctly, it is essential to follow up with your surgeon. They can assess the surgical site, determine if the healing process is on track, and address any concerns you may have. Sometimes, additional treatment may be necessary if there are complications or if the hemorrhoids were not entirely removed.

As for the recovery time, it can vary significantly from person to person. Generally, patients can expect to experience discomfort for a few weeks post-surgery. Most people begin to feel better within one to two weeks, but complete healing can take several weeks to a few months. During this time, it is vital to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, which may include dietary modifications to ensure soft stools, proper hygiene, and possibly the use of stool softeners to reduce strain during bowel movements.

In summary, while pain, swelling, and some bleeding can be normal after hemorrhoid surgery, it is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms. They can provide reassurance, evaluate your healing progress, and adjust your treatment plan as needed. If you have any concerns about your recovery or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for guidance.
