How many days does it usually take for folliculitis to heal?

Hello, recently I noticed a pimple around my waist, possibly due to wearing tight pants.
I visited a dermatologist who prescribed me a topical ointment called clindamycin.
It's the second day of using it, and while it has improved somewhat, I came across a news article in a student forum yesterday about something near the navel that resembled a tumor, specifically mentioning a type of intestinal issue, and unfortunately, that person passed away.
After reading that, I'm unsure if I should go to the hospital for a detailed examination.
My mom advised me not to scare myself, but I would like to know if a pimple can really resemble folliculitis.
If it is improving, should I not worry too much? After calming down and thinking it over, I feel that going straight to the hospital might be a waste of resources...
so I found this place to ask for a doctor's opinion.
Thank you.
I apologize for the image looking a bit wet due to the ointment: https://i.imgur.com/4PcoYlV.jpg

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine

Hello, based on your image, it does appear to be folliculitis.
Generally, maintaining dryness will lead to improvement in about 3 to 7 days.
As for the situation mentioned in the news, it is just a rare exception and not applicable to your case, so there is no need to worry excessively.
Thank you for your question.

More Info

Folliculitis is a common skin condition characterized by the inflammation of hair follicles, often resulting in red, swollen bumps that may resemble acne. The healing time for folliculitis can vary depending on several factors, including the severity of the condition, the underlying cause, and the treatment being used. Generally, mild cases of folliculitis can resolve within a few days to a week with appropriate treatment, while more severe or recurrent cases may take longer to heal.

In your case, it sounds like you have been prescribed clindamycin, which is an antibiotic that can be effective in treating bacterial folliculitis. The fact that you have noticed some improvement after just one day of treatment is a positive sign. It’s important to continue using the medication as directed by your dermatologist, as this will help to ensure that the infection is fully resolved.

Regarding your concerns about the bump near your waistline, it is understandable to feel anxious, especially after reading alarming information online. However, it is crucial to remember that not all bumps or lesions are indicative of serious conditions like tumors. Folliculitis can often mimic other skin issues, including cysts or even benign growths, but it is typically not a cause for alarm if it is responding to treatment.

If the bump continues to improve with the use of clindamycin and does not show signs of worsening—such as increased redness, swelling, or pain—there may be no immediate need for further medical evaluation. However, if you notice any concerning changes or if the bump does not resolve completely within a week or so, it would be wise to follow up with your dermatologist for a more thorough examination. They may perform additional tests or imaging if necessary to rule out other conditions.

It’s also worth noting that tight clothing can contribute to folliculitis by trapping sweat and bacteria against the skin, so wearing looser-fitting clothing may help prevent future occurrences. Additionally, maintaining good hygiene and avoiding irritants can further reduce the risk of developing folliculitis.

In summary, while folliculitis can take some time to heal, your current treatment seems to be effective based on your description. Keep monitoring the area, follow your dermatologist's advice, and do not hesitate to seek further medical attention if you have any lingering concerns. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
