Sexually transmitted infection (STI) transmission issues?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask if it is possible to get infected if I touch something that a person of the opposite sex has touched, and I happen to scratch an itch through my pants.
Also, if I sit on a chair that someone with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) has used, could I be at risk? Thank you.

An, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/10/15

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine

Hello, based on your description, itching through clothing or sitting on a chair will not transmit sexually transmitted infections.
Thank you for your question.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are primarily transmitted through direct sexual contact, which includes vaginal, anal, and oral sex. However, the concern about indirect contact, such as touching surfaces or objects that an infected person has touched, is a common question.
To address your specific concerns, it is important to understand how STDs are transmitted. Most STDs, including HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and herpes, require direct contact with infected bodily fluids (such as semen, vaginal fluids, or blood) or direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected area. The likelihood of transmission through indirect contact is extremely low.

1. Touching Surfaces: If a person with an STD touches a surface, the pathogens may be present on that surface for a limited time. However, most pathogens that cause STDs do not survive long outside the human body. For instance, HIV does not survive long outside the body and is not transmitted through surfaces. Similarly, other STDs like gonorrhea and chlamydia require direct contact with mucous membranes to be transmitted. Therefore, simply touching a surface or object that an infected person has touched is not a significant risk for transmission.

2. Scratching or Itching: If you are experiencing discomfort and scratch yourself through clothing, the risk of transmitting an STD in this manner is negligible. The pathogens would need to be present in sufficient quantities and in a manner that allows them to enter your body, which is highly unlikely through clothing.
3. Sitting on a Chair: The same principle applies to sitting on a chair that an infected person has used. The risk of contracting an STD from sitting on a chair is virtually non-existent. The pathogens would need to be transferred from the chair to your skin, and even then, they would need a route of entry, which is not typically provided through intact skin or clothing.

In summary, while it is theoretically possible for some infections to be transmitted through indirect contact, the actual risk is extremely low for STDs. The primary mode of transmission remains direct sexual contact. If you have concerns about potential exposure to STDs, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for testing and further guidance. Regular screenings and practicing safe sex are effective ways to prevent the transmission of STDs.

If you are experiencing symptoms or have specific concerns about your health, it is essential to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can provide personalized recommendations and testing options based on your situation.
