Post-abortion hemorrhage with heavy bleeding?

At over 6 weeks of pregnancy, during a check-up, the baby still had a heartbeat, but there was brown spotting.
The doctor informed that this was normal and recommended taking some progesterone, allowing me to continue working.
However, during the check-up on October 2, at over 8 weeks, the doctor informed me that the baby had no heartbeat and had not grown, advising me to undergo a surgical abortion.
I then stopped working to rest.

On October 3, I underwent the surgery, and I was told that I would not experience bleeding after a week.
The bleeding was heavier on the day of the surgery, but afterward, it was mostly a small amount of brown spotting.
More than a week later, there was no bleeding, except for occasional slight brown discharge.
However, on October 16, I suddenly experienced a large amount of brown discharge, and on October 17, bright red bleeding began, accompanied by cramping in my lower abdomen.

What should I do?

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It sounds like you've been through a challenging time, and it's important to address your concerns regarding post-abortion bleeding and when to seek medical attention.

After an abortion, whether it is a medical or surgical procedure, it is common to experience some bleeding. This bleeding can vary in color and intensity, ranging from light spotting to heavier bleeding. The presence of brownish or coffee-colored blood is typically old blood, which is often not a cause for concern. However, fresh red blood can indicate a different situation.

In your case, you mentioned that after the procedure, you experienced a significant amount of bleeding initially, followed by a period of light spotting. This is generally expected. However, the sudden onset of heavy bleeding accompanied by fresh red blood and abdominal pain is concerning and warrants immediate medical attention. Here are some guidelines on how to manage post-abortion bleeding and when to seek help:
1. Monitor the Amount of Bleeding: If you are soaking through a pad in less than an hour or passing large clots (larger than a golf ball), this is a sign that you should seek medical attention immediately.

2. Accompanying Symptoms: The presence of severe abdominal pain, fever, chills, or a foul-smelling discharge can indicate complications such as infection or retained products of conception. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider.

3. Duration of Bleeding: While some bleeding is normal for up to a few weeks post-abortion, if you find that the bleeding suddenly increases or changes in character (from brown to bright red), it is essential to consult with your doctor.

4. Follow-Up Appointments: Ensure that you attend any follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider. These visits are important to monitor your recovery and address any complications that may arise.

5. Rest and Recovery: After an abortion, your body needs time to heal. It's advisable to take it easy, avoid strenuous activities, and listen to your body. If you feel unwell or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out for medical advice.

6. Emotional Support: The emotional aspect of going through an abortion can be significant. Consider seeking support from friends, family, or professional counseling if you feel overwhelmed.

In summary, while some bleeding after an abortion is normal, the sudden increase in bleeding and the presence of abdominal pain are concerning signs that require prompt medical evaluation. It's always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health. Please reach out to your healthcare provider as soon as possible to discuss your symptoms and receive appropriate care. Your health and well-being are paramount, and timely intervention can help prevent complications.
