Sensation of a foreign body in the throat?
1.
Recently, I have been feeling a constant sensation of a foreign body in my throat.
I tried to cough it out and noticed a slight amount of blood.
I consulted a doctor about what this symptom might be.
A few days ago, I had an X-ray, and the doctor said there were no foreign objects and that my lungs showed no signs of bubbles, but we still cannot determine the cause of the coughing up blood.

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine
Hello, there are many microvessels in your throat, and if you cough too violently, these microvessels can bleed, leading to the phenomenon you described.
It is recommended to avoid forceful coughing, and the condition should improve.
Thank you for your question.

The sensation of a foreign body in the throat, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as coughing up blood, can be concerning and warrants careful evaluation. Based on your description, it seems you have already undergone an X-ray examination, which ruled out the presence of any foreign objects or significant lung issues. However, the persistent sensation of something being lodged in your throat, along with the presence of blood in your cough, suggests that there may be underlying issues that need to be addressed.
There are several potential causes for the sensation of a foreign body in the throat:
1. Postnasal Drip: This is a common condition where mucus drips down the back of the throat from the nasal passages. It can cause irritation and a sensation of fullness or a lump in the throat. This can be exacerbated by allergies, sinus infections, or colds.
2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can lead to irritation of the throat and esophagus, causing a sensation of something being stuck. It can also lead to coughing and, in some cases, blood if the esophagus is significantly irritated or damaged.
3. Throat Infections: Infections such as pharyngitis or tonsillitis can cause swelling and discomfort in the throat, leading to the feeling of a foreign body. Severe infections can also lead to bleeding.
4. Esophageal Disorders: Conditions such as esophagitis, esophageal strictures, or even tumors can cause a sensation of obstruction in the throat. These conditions may also lead to bleeding, especially if there is significant irritation or damage to the esophageal lining.
5. Psychogenic Factors: Sometimes, anxiety or stress can manifest as a sensation of a lump in the throat, known as globus sensation. This is often not associated with any physical obstruction but can be distressing nonetheless.
Given that you have experienced coughing up blood, it is crucial to follow up with a healthcare professional. While the X-ray results were reassuring, further evaluation may be necessary. Here are some steps you might consider:
- Consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist: An ENT can perform a thorough examination of your throat and possibly conduct a laryngoscopy to visualize the throat and vocal cords directly. This can help identify any abnormalities that may not be visible on an X-ray.
- Gastroenterology Evaluation: If GERD is suspected, a gastroenterologist can perform tests such as an upper endoscopy to examine the esophagus and stomach and assess for any signs of reflux or damage.
- Blood Tests: If you haven't already, consider having blood tests to check for signs of infection or other underlying conditions that may explain your symptoms.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep a detailed record of your symptoms, including when they occur, their severity, and any associated factors (like food intake or stress levels). This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider.
In summary, while the sensation of a foreign body in the throat can have various benign causes, the presence of blood in your cough is a red flag that should not be ignored. It is essential to pursue further medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Your health and well-being are paramount, so do not hesitate to seek help from medical professionals who can provide the necessary care.
