Am I Approaching Menopause? Symptoms at Age 50 - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Inquire whether one is approaching menopause?

Hello, I would like to ask a question.
I am 50 years old, and my menstrual cycle has always been normal.
My last menstrual period was on August 19.
However, I ovulated in early October, and in mid-October, I experienced breast tenderness, but this tenderness has subsided, and my period still hasn't arrived.
Today, I went to the hospital for a Pap smear, and the doctor examined me and said that my uterus and ovaries are shrinking, indicating that I may only have one to two years left before menopause.
I would like to know, because I had sexual intercourse a few months ago and was easily aroused and reached orgasm at that time, and recently during DIY activities, I also find it easy to become aroused and reach orgasm.
If I am nearing menopause, why am I experiencing these sensations? I apologize for bothering the doctor.

Dr. Chen Zhiyu reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Menopause, like puberty, is a transitional period marked by a series of physiological changes.
Menstrual irregularities are just one aspect of this process and are particularly noticeable.
However, whether one has truly entered menopause can be confirmed through blood tests.
Other assessments can serve as references.
Wishing you health and happiness.
Please take this into consideration.

At the age of 50, many women begin to experience symptoms that may indicate they are approaching menopause. Menopause is defined as the time when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months, and it typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. However, the transition to menopause, known as perimenopause, can begin several years earlier and is characterized by various physical and emotional symptoms.

From your description, it seems you are experiencing some typical signs of perimenopause. The irregularity of your menstrual cycle, with your last period on August 19 and the absence of menstruation in October, aligns with the changes that often occur during this transitional phase. Additionally, breast tenderness and changes in libido, such as increased arousal and ease of achieving orgasm, can also occur during perimenopause. These symptoms can be attributed to fluctuating hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone, which can lead to a variety of physical sensations and emotional responses.

It is important to note that even as you approach menopause, your body may still produce sufficient estrogen to maintain some sexual function and responsiveness. This can explain why you are still experiencing vaginal lubrication and the ability to reach orgasm. Hormonal fluctuations can lead to periods of heightened sensitivity and libido, even as your body is transitioning toward menopause.
Your doctor’s observation that your ovaries are shrinking is a common sign of the aging reproductive system. As women age, the number of viable eggs decreases, and the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen. This process can lead to the cessation of menstruation and other menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and changes in sexual function.

If you are concerned about your symptoms or the changes in your menstrual cycle, it is advisable to discuss them further with your healthcare provider. They may recommend hormone level testing to assess your estrogen and progesterone levels, which can provide more insight into your reproductive health. Additionally, they can help you understand what to expect in the coming months and years as you transition through menopause.

In summary, at age 50, it is quite common to experience symptoms associated with perimenopause, including irregular periods and changes in sexual function. The presence of breast tenderness and the ability to achieve sexual arousal suggest that your body is still responding to hormonal changes, even as you approach menopause. Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider can help monitor your symptoms and provide guidance on managing any discomfort you may experience during this transition.
