May I ask the doctor?

Hello, I would like to ask the doctor two questions.
Today, I went to Taipei for the first time in a long while.
On the train, there were two or three Black individuals who were only wearing their masks over their mouths and not properly covering their noses while talking.
When there were fewer people around, I distanced myself from them.
I am concerned about the possibility of contracting COVID-19, especially since my child was not wearing their mask properly at that time.
Additionally, I had previously scheduled a vaccination, but on the day of the vaccination, I was still taking traditional Chinese medicine for health maintenance.
Should I stop taking the medicine beforehand? Thank you for your answers.

Uno, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/11/04

Hello: The COVID-19 virus is primarily transmitted through droplets or contact.
If the two individuals were not sneezing or talking at that time, and you were wearing a mask, along with washing your hands after leaving the train, you should generally be at low risk of infection.
If you are still concerned, monitor yourself or your child for any symptoms and seek medical attention if they arise.
Regarding your second question: receiving the flu vaccine is unrelated to the use of traditional Chinese medicine for health maintenance.

Hello! Thank you for your questions regarding COVID-19 concerns and vaccine preparation. Let's address both of your concerns in detail.

Firstly, regarding your exposure to individuals on the train who were not wearing their masks properly, it’s understandable to feel anxious about potential exposure to COVID-19. While wearing a mask significantly reduces the risk of transmission, the effectiveness can be compromised if others around you are not wearing their masks correctly. The risk of infection in such scenarios depends on several factors, including the duration of exposure, the ventilation in the area, and whether the individuals were symptomatic or asymptomatic.
In general, if you maintained a safe distance and limited your time near those individuals, your risk of contracting the virus is lower. However, since you mentioned that your child was not wearing a mask properly, it’s wise to monitor for any symptoms in both yourself and your child over the next few days. Symptoms of COVID-19 can include fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, and loss of taste or smell, among others. If either of you develops symptoms, it would be prudent to get tested for COVID-19.
As for your second question regarding the timing of your vaccination and the use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is generally advisable to consult with your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking before receiving a vaccine. While there is no specific contraindication against taking TCM while getting vaccinated, some herbal remedies may interact with the immune response or the vaccine itself.
In many cases, healthcare providers recommend that patients avoid any medications that could potentially suppress the immune system right before vaccination. This is to ensure that your body can mount an effective immune response to the vaccine. If your TCM regimen is aimed at boosting your health and does not contain any immunosuppressive ingredients, it may be fine to continue. However, it’s best to discuss this with your healthcare provider to get personalized advice based on your specific health situation.

In summary, while your risk of infection from the train incident seems manageable, it’s important to stay vigilant for symptoms. Regarding your vaccination, consulting with your healthcare provider about your TCM use is the best course of action to ensure that you are fully prepared for the vaccine.
Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, can help improve your overall immune function, which is beneficial both for your health and for your response to the vaccine. If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. Stay safe and take care!
