Is this normal?
Recently, I have noticed that the positions of my nipples seem to be asymmetrical.
It's not very obvious, with a visual deviation of less than 1 centimeter; the left nipple is slightly lower than the right.
However, during breast examinations, I haven't felt anything unusual.
Is this situation normal, doctor? Additionally, sometimes I notice a small yellowish spot on my chest, which is not painful when pressed.
It is located in the upper right area of my chest, towards the outer side, and it usually takes about 7-14 days to disappear.
I have observed that it tends to appear around the time of my menstrual period.
What could this be? Should I be concerned?

Dr. Chen Jiaming reply Surgery
The development of breast tissue on each side is not always identical, so the position of the nipples can vary, which is normal.
As for the small yellowish area you mentioned, it's unclear what exactly it looks like, but if it appears and disappears in accordance with your menstrual cycle, there is generally no need for excessive concern, as it is likely a benign lesion.
However, if you still have doubts, it is advisable to visit a breast specialist for an in-person evaluation.

Breast asymmetry and unusual discoloration can be concerning for many individuals, but it is essential to understand that some degree of asymmetry in breast size and shape is quite common among women. In fact, studies suggest that nearly 90% of women experience some level of breast asymmetry. The slight difference you mentioned, with one nipple being about 1 cm lower than the other, is generally considered normal and often does not indicate any underlying health issues.
Breast tissue is influenced by various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, and body weight. During different phases of the menstrual cycle, hormonal fluctuations can cause changes in breast tissue, leading to temporary swelling or tenderness. This can also contribute to the perception of asymmetry. It is important to perform regular breast self-exams, ideally a week after your menstrual period ends, to familiarize yourself with the normal look and feel of your breasts. This practice can help you notice any significant changes over time.
Regarding the yellowish discoloration you observe on your breast, particularly around the right upper outer quadrant, it is crucial to consider several possibilities. One common explanation could be related to hormonal changes associated with your menstrual cycle. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone can affect the skin and breast tissue, potentially leading to temporary discoloration or changes in texture.
Another possibility is that the yellowish area could be related to a benign condition such as seborrheic dermatitis or a localized skin irritation. Seborrheic dermatitis can cause yellowish, scaly patches on the skin and is often exacerbated by hormonal fluctuations. If the area is not painful and resolves on its own within a week or two, it may not be a cause for concern. However, if you notice any changes in the texture, color, or if the area becomes painful or persists beyond a couple of weeks, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
While breast cancer is a concern for many, it is essential to remember that most breast changes are benign. The absence of pain when pressing on the yellowish area is a positive sign, as breast cancer typically presents with other symptoms such as a lump, persistent pain, or changes in the skin texture. However, if you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, it is prudent to discuss these concerns with your doctor.
In summary, slight breast asymmetry is quite normal, and the yellowish discoloration you are experiencing may be related to hormonal changes or benign skin conditions. Regular self-exams and awareness of your breast health are crucial. If you have any doubts or if the symptoms persist, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can provide a thorough examination and, if necessary, recommend imaging studies or other diagnostic tests to ensure your peace of mind. Remember, early detection and understanding your body are key components of maintaining breast health.
