Height issues
I am 16 years old, but I will turn 17 after December 5th.
I went to see my growth plate yesterday, and the doctor said it is almost closed.
The doctor also mentioned that I might grow another 1 to 2 centimeters.
Hearing this made me very sad.
During the examination, the doctor said I have grown less than average.
The key point is that I previously took traditional Chinese medicine, but during that time, I drank cold beverages.
My current height is 162.3 cm.
My dad is 174 cm and my mom is 155 cm.
I don’t know if I can still grow taller.
I really want to grow.
I found online that skipping rope every day might help, but my house is small, so I plan to do 300 jumps in place, which should be fine.
I really want to reach 170 cm or taller, but the doctor directly told me it’s unlikely.
However, I read online that it is possible with effort, which gives me some confidence.
I have pectus excavatum, and I wonder if that has any effect.
My weight is 52.1 kg.
I haven’t exercised much before and prefer to play on my phone at home.
I also don’t have much time to exercise during the week.
What should I do? Can I still grow taller? I want to reach 170 cm, but it seems like an unreachable goal.
I had a health check in October this year, and I was 160.7 cm, but when I measured at the hospital on November 28th, I was 162.3 cm.
I don’t know if I have actually grown or if it’s just a measurement error, but the doctor said I have grown.
Over the past year, I only grew about 4 cm.
I graduated from elementary school at around 143 cm and should be 159 cm now.
During that time, I took traditional Chinese medicine.
In fifth grade, I drank a growth tonic, but I still drank cold beverages during that period.
I started to experience voice changes in the first semester of second grade.
I have body hair, but I haven’t developed armpit hair at all.
The fact that I haven’t developed armpit hair makes me wonder if I can still grow taller.
Isn’t it said that as long as I haven’t developed armpit hair, I can still grow? What other methods can help me grow taller? I am feeling very sad.
I usually go to bed before 11 PM and rarely stay up past midnight.
I want to be taller.
Also, are there any methods to make my shoulders wider? I have a smaller bone structure by nature, but I want to be bigger like my classmates.
Please help me! What other methods can help me grow taller?

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
Typically, after the age of 15, if a male's growth plates have fused, he will not grow taller.
A height of 160 cm or above is generally not considered short.
Height does not determine everything about a person; one can engage in more physical activity and supplement nutrition to become healthier and more energetic.
Currently, medical science has not found a way to increase height after the growth plates have closed.

More Info
At 17 years old, you are approaching the end of your growth period, and it’s understandable to have concerns about your height. The growth plates in your bones, which are responsible for height increase, typically close after puberty, and once they are closed, further height growth is unlikely. However, there are a few factors to consider regarding your situation.
1. Growth Plate Status: You mentioned that a doctor indicated your growth plates are "close to closing." This is a critical point because once the growth plates are fully closed, your bones can no longer grow in length. Generally, for males, growth plates close between the ages of 16 and 18, but this can vary. If your doctor suggested that you might still grow 1-2 cm, it indicates that there may still be a small window for growth, but it is limited.
2. Genetics: Your height potential is significantly influenced by your genetics. With a father who is 174 cm and a mother who is 155 cm, your genetic predisposition suggests that you may have the potential to reach a height somewhere in between. However, environmental factors such as nutrition, exercise, and overall health also play a role.
3. Nutrition and Lifestyle: Proper nutrition is essential for growth. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium and vitamin D, is crucial for bone health. Regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises like jumping rope or playing basketball, can help promote healthy growth while you still have the potential. However, it’s important to ensure that you are not overexerting yourself and that you are getting adequate rest.
4. Sleep: Sleep is vital for growth, especially during adolescence. Growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep, so maintaining a regular sleep schedule and ensuring you get enough quality sleep each night is important.
5. Posture and Exercise: While you may not be able to significantly increase your height at this stage, good posture can help you appear taller. Engaging in exercises that strengthen your core and back muscles can improve your posture. Additionally, while you mentioned wanting to widen your shoulders, strength training exercises focusing on the shoulders and upper body can help develop muscle mass in that area, giving the appearance of a broader frame.
6. Emotional Well-being: It’s natural to feel disappointed about height concerns, especially when comparing yourself to peers. Remember that height does not define your worth or capabilities. Focus on your strengths, interests, and personal development. Building confidence and self-esteem is crucial during this time.
7. Consulting Professionals: If you have ongoing concerns about your growth or health, consider consulting with a healthcare professional or a nutritionist. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and current condition.
In conclusion, while your potential for significant height increase may be limited at this stage, focusing on a healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition, and exercise can help you maximize your growth potential. Remember to embrace your unique qualities and focus on personal growth beyond just physical attributes.
