Phimosis with redness and swelling of the foreskin?
Hello doctor, a few days ago I did a DIY procedure on my foreskin, and it became red and swollen.
The next day, there was some reduction in swelling, but several blood vessels became very prominent.
For the past few days, my penis has been lackluster, and after an erection, it subsides very quickly.
I haven't experienced any morning erections during this time.
What could be the cause of this condition?

Redness and swelling of the foreskin can be concerning and may arise from various causes. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced some irritation and vascular changes in the area following a DIY procedure. Here are some potential causes and considerations regarding your symptoms:
1. Irritation or Trauma: The most common cause of redness and swelling in the foreskin is irritation or trauma, especially if you have engaged in any activities that may have caused friction or injury. This can lead to localized inflammation, which may manifest as redness and swelling. The visibility of blood vessels can also increase due to inflammation, as the body directs more blood flow to the affected area to promote healing.
2. Infection: Another possibility is an infection, such as balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans (head of the penis) and can extend to the foreskin. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, discharge, and sometimes pain. If you notice any unusual discharge or persistent symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.
3. Allergic Reaction: If you used any products (such as soaps, lotions, or lubricants) during your DIY procedure, you might be experiencing an allergic reaction. Allergies can cause localized swelling and redness, and avoiding irritants can help alleviate the symptoms.
4. Vascular Changes: The sudden visibility of blood vessels could indicate increased blood flow due to inflammation or irritation. This is often a normal response to localized trauma or irritation. However, if you experience significant changes in erectile function, such as difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, this could be a sign of underlying issues that may require medical attention.
5. Hormonal or Psychological Factors: The absence of morning erections (morning wood) can be influenced by various factors, including stress, anxiety, hormonal changes, or even physical discomfort. If you are feeling anxious about your symptoms, this could also contribute to changes in sexual function.
Recommendations:
- Rest and Avoid Further Irritation: Give your body time to heal. Avoid any activities that may further irritate the area, including sexual activity, until the redness and swelling subside.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If the redness and swelling do not improve within a few days, or if you develop additional symptoms such as pain, discharge, or fever, seek medical attention.
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: If you have concerns about your erectile function or if the symptoms persist, it would be beneficial to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests to rule out infections or other underlying conditions.
- Maintain Hygiene: Ensure that you maintain good hygiene in the genital area. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and avoid using harsh products that could exacerbate irritation.
In summary, while redness and swelling of the foreskin can often be attributed to irritation or minor trauma, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice if they persist or worsen. Taking care of your genital health is crucial, and addressing any concerns early can help prevent complications.
