Menstrual flow is light, brown in color, and there is mild pain in the lower abdomen?
Hello, my last menstrual period was from October 31 to November 6, and everything was normal.
I was expecting my period to arrive around early December, but starting from November 29, I noticed a slight light brown discharge.
On December 1, it seemed like my period started, but the flow was very light and mostly brown (similar to the last few days of a typical period).
From December 5 until now, there has been a little bit of red blood, but it is still mostly brown, and the amount is not significant...
Additionally, it feels like it hasn't ended yet (it's been over 7 days).
Normally, I experience dysmenorrhea and breast tenderness before my period, but this time there was no breast tenderness.
However, I do feel some mild discomfort in my lower abdomen, possibly in the gastrointestinal or uterine area.
I am unsure if this is normal and would like to consult a physician.
Thank you.
*No recent sexual activity* Recently, I have been experiencing gastrointestinal issues, including frequent bloating and poor motility, so I visited a gastroenterologist on December 1 and have been taking the following medications daily: STROCAIN TAB (Paracetamol) and SESDEN CAP (Simethicone).

Irregular menstrual symptoms can be concerning, especially when they deviate from your normal cycle. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a light flow of menstrual blood that is predominantly brownish in color, along with some mild discomfort in your lower abdomen. Let’s break down the potential causes and considerations regarding your symptoms.
Firstly, the brown color of menstrual blood typically indicates older blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus. This can happen at the beginning or end of a menstrual period. However, since you mentioned that this light flow has persisted for over seven days and is accompanied by discomfort, it is important to consider other factors that could be influencing your menstrual cycle.
One possibility is hormonal fluctuations. Stress, changes in weight, and even certain medications can affect hormone levels, leading to irregularities in your menstrual cycle. Since you mentioned taking medications for gastrointestinal issues, it is worth noting that some medications can also impact menstrual regularity and flow.
Another consideration is the possibility of an underlying condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids, or endometriosis. These conditions can lead to irregular bleeding patterns and discomfort. Given that you typically experience dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation) and breast tenderness, the absence of these symptoms this cycle could indicate a hormonal imbalance or another issue that warrants further investigation.
It is also important to consider the role of your gastrointestinal health in this situation. You mentioned experiencing bloating and gastrointestinal discomfort, which could potentially influence your overall well-being and, in turn, your menstrual cycle. The gut and reproductive health are interconnected, and gastrointestinal issues can sometimes manifest as changes in menstrual symptoms.
Given that you have not engaged in sexual activity recently, the likelihood of pregnancy-related issues is low. However, if there is any chance of pregnancy, it would be prudent to take a pregnancy test to rule that out.
In light of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, particularly a gynecologist, who can perform a thorough evaluation. They may recommend a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or blood tests to assess hormone levels and check for any abnormalities in the reproductive organs. It is essential to address any persistent changes in your menstrual cycle, especially if they are accompanied by discomfort.
In summary, while light menstrual flow and brown discharge can sometimes be normal, the duration and associated discomfort you are experiencing warrant further investigation. Hormonal imbalances, underlying conditions, and gastrointestinal health can all play a role in menstrual irregularities. Seeking medical advice will help ensure that any potential issues are identified and managed appropriately, allowing you to maintain your reproductive health and overall well-being.
