Oral contraceptives

Does taking oral contraceptives cause hair loss? I've been taking Yaz for almost two years and I've noticed a significant amount of hair loss.
I'm not sure if it's due to the birth control pills.
I've read online that hair loss can occur 2 to 3 months after stopping the medication, but I'm currently still taking it and I'm unsure whether I should stop or switch to another medication.
Please advise.

Wei Wei, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/12/22

Dr. Chen Zhiyu reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Regarding your concerns, the response is as follows: Long-term use of contraceptive pills can lead to hormonal changes, which may sometimes affect the metabolism of hair follicles.
It is advisable to consult a dermatologist to assess the health of hair growth.
If the medication is being taken for contraceptive purposes, it is generally recommended to complete the entire cycle of the medication before discontinuing it.
Abruptly stopping the medication mid-cycle may lead to unexpected bleeding and irregular menstruation.
Please pay special attention to this.
Thank you for your inquiry, and I wish you health and happiness.

The relationship between birth control pills and hair loss is a topic of interest for many women, particularly those who have noticed changes in their hair while using hormonal contraceptives. Birth control pills, particularly those containing estrogen and progestin, can influence hair growth due to their hormonal effects on the body.

Firstly, it is important to understand that hair loss can occur for a variety of reasons, including genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, stress, nutritional deficiencies, and medical conditions. In the context of birth control pills, the primary concern is how these hormones affect the hair growth cycle.
During the use of birth control pills, the levels of estrogen in the body are elevated. Estrogen is known to prolong the anagen phase (the growth phase) of hair follicles, which can lead to thicker and healthier hair for some women. However, when a woman stops taking the pill, there is a sudden drop in estrogen levels, which can trigger a condition known as telogen effluvium. This condition causes a significant number of hair follicles to enter the telogen phase (the resting phase) simultaneously, leading to noticeable hair shedding. This phenomenon typically occurs 2 to 3 months after discontinuation of the pill.

While you mentioned that you have been taking the birth control pill for about two years and are experiencing hair loss, it is essential to consider other factors that might be contributing to this issue. For instance, if you have a family history of hair loss, you may be genetically predisposed to conditions like androgenetic alopecia (female pattern hair loss), which can occur independently of birth control use. Additionally, stress, nutritional deficiencies (such as iron or vitamin D), and other hormonal imbalances can also lead to hair loss.

If you suspect that your birth control pill is causing your hair loss, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They can help determine whether the pill is the likely cause of your hair loss or if other factors are at play. If it is concluded that the pill may be contributing to your hair loss, your doctor may suggest switching to a different formulation or exploring non-hormonal contraceptive options.

Moreover, it is crucial to avoid making any abrupt changes to your medication without professional guidance. Stopping or switching birth control pills can have other implications for your reproductive health, so it is best to discuss your concerns with a healthcare provider who can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status.

In summary, while birth control pills can influence hair loss, it is essential to consider the broader context of your health and any other contributing factors. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with the best course of action tailored to your specific situation.
