Will a eustachian tube obstruction that has persisted for several years affect hearing?
Several years ago, I went to the hospital for a hearing test, and the doctor diagnosed me with Eustachian tube dysfunction.
After taking the prescribed medication, there was no improvement.
The doctor suggested creating a small hole in my eardrum, but I was afraid and decided against it since the impact of the Eustachian tube dysfunction was minimal (the only symptoms I experienced were a wind-like sound in my left ear when I turned quickly and a heartbeat sound when I pressed my head towards my left chest).
Recently, I suddenly noticed that the wind sound and the heartbeat sound have both diminished.
I'm not sure if my Eustachian tube has improved or if my hearing has worsened.
Is it normal for Eustachian tube dysfunction to persist for several years?

Long-term Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) can significantly impact hearing and lead to various symptoms, including a sensation of fullness in the ear, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and fluctuating hearing loss. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure in the ear. When this tube becomes blocked or does not function properly, it can lead to a buildup of fluid in the middle ear, which can affect hearing.
In your case, it seems that you have experienced symptoms related to Eustachian tube dysfunction for several years, including the perception of wind or heartbeat sounds in your ear when moving your head or bending down. These symptoms can be quite distressing and may indicate that the Eustachian tube is not functioning optimally. The fact that you have noticed a decrease in these sounds may suggest an improvement in Eustachian tube function, but it could also indicate a change in your hearing ability.
It is not uncommon for individuals with long-term ETD to experience fluctuations in their symptoms. In some cases, the Eustachian tube may spontaneously improve, leading to a reduction in symptoms. However, it is also possible that prolonged dysfunction could lead to changes in the middle ear, such as fluid accumulation or even structural changes, which could affect hearing.
If you have not experienced significant improvement with medication, and considering your symptoms have persisted for years, it may be worth revisiting the option of a surgical intervention, such as tympanostomy (placing a tube in the eardrum) or other procedures aimed at improving Eustachian tube function. These procedures can help alleviate symptoms and improve hearing by allowing better ventilation of the middle ear.
Regarding your concern about whether the long-term Eustachian tube blockage is normal, it is important to understand that while some individuals may experience chronic ETD without severe consequences, others may develop complications, such as chronic otitis media or permanent hearing loss. Regular follow-up with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist is essential to monitor your condition and assess any changes in your hearing.
In summary, while it is possible for Eustachian tube dysfunction to improve over time, it is crucial to have ongoing evaluations to ensure that your hearing remains stable and that no further complications arise. If you notice any changes in your hearing or if your symptoms worsen, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. Your ENT specialist can provide a comprehensive evaluation and discuss the best course of action tailored to your specific situation.
