Phlegm issues in the throat?
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask about having phlegm in my throat after meals.
The phlegm is white and very sticky, making it difficult to cough up.
Sometimes I also experience this in the morning.
Are there any methods to relieve or resolve this issue? Is it okay to take Chuanbei Pipa Gao (Fritillaria and Loquat Syrup)? Thank you!

Hello: Common issues that may be related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) include dietary recommendations such as eating smaller, more frequent meals, reducing the intake of fried and spicy foods, limiting coffee, tea, and sweets, and increasing water consumption.
If symptoms do not improve, it is advisable to consult an otolaryngologist or a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info
Managing phlegm in the throat can be a common concern for many individuals, and it can arise from various causes, including dietary habits, environmental factors, and underlying health conditions. The presence of white, sticky phlegm, particularly after eating or upon waking, may indicate several potential issues that warrant attention.
Causes of Phlegm in the Throat
1. Dietary Factors: Certain foods can increase mucus production. Dairy products, for instance, are known to thicken mucus for some individuals, leading to a sensation of phlegm in the throat after meals. Spicy foods, on the other hand, may temporarily thin mucus but can also irritate the throat in some cases.
2. Allergies: Allergic reactions to dust, pollen, pet dander, or certain foods can lead to increased mucus production as the body attempts to flush out allergens. This can manifest as phlegm in the throat, particularly in the morning or after meals.
3. Respiratory Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can cause an increase in mucus production. Conditions like sinusitis, bronchitis, or even the common cold can lead to post-nasal drip, where mucus drips down the back of the throat, causing discomfort.
4. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can irritate the throat and stimulate mucus production. If you experience heartburn or a sour taste in your mouth along with phlegm, GERD might be a contributing factor.
5. Environmental Irritants: Exposure to smoke, pollution, or strong odors can irritate the throat and lead to increased mucus production.
Remedies for Managing Phlegm
1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help thin mucus, making it easier to expel. Warm liquids, such as herbal teas or broths, can be particularly soothing.
2. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water or taking a hot shower can help loosen mucus in the throat and nasal passages.
3. Salt Water Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water can soothe a sore throat and help clear mucus.
4. Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your home can add moisture to the air, which may help reduce mucus thickness and soothe irritated airways.
5. Avoid Irritants: Try to limit exposure to smoke, strong perfumes, and other irritants that can exacerbate mucus production.
6. Dietary Adjustments: If you suspect that dairy or certain foods are contributing to your symptoms, consider reducing their intake and observing any changes.
Use of Herbal Remedies
Regarding your question about using Chuanbei Pipa Gao (川貝枇杷膏), this traditional Chinese remedy is often used to soothe coughs and relieve phlegm. It contains ingredients like loquat and other herbs that are believed to have soothing properties for the throat and may help reduce phlegm. However, individual responses can vary, and it’s essential to ensure that you are not allergic to any of its components.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms such as fever, difficulty breathing, or significant changes in your phlegm (such as color or consistency), it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They can help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatments.
In summary, managing phlegm in the throat involves understanding the potential causes and implementing various remedies to alleviate discomfort. Staying hydrated, avoiding irritants, and considering herbal remedies like Chuanbei Pipa Gao may provide relief. However, if symptoms persist, seeking medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment.
