Denture impression issues?

Hello, doctor.
A few days ago, I went to the clinic to have an impression for my dentures, and the dentist used a soft silicone material.
I am getting a denture for my lower right tooth; do I also need impressions for both the upper and lower arches? Additionally, I have a dental bridge with four connected teeth on my lower left side, and it feels like the dentist adhered the soft silicone very tightly.
If I pull hard to remove the silicone, will it affect my dental bridge on the lower left? Thank you.

Dear Mr.
Chen,
Hello! If it is agar-based, there will be no impact.
However, if it is silicone, it will have an effect.
Especially if these four dentures are loose, you must inform the dentist first! Take precautions! It is essential to make impressions for both the upper and lower dentures! Communicate more! Wishing you all the best!
Sincerely,
Dr.

When it comes to denture impressions, there are several key considerations and concerns that patients often have. Based on your inquiry, it seems you are undergoing a process to create a denture for your lower right teeth while also having a bridge on your lower left side. Let’s address your questions and provide some additional context regarding the impression process and its implications.

Firstly, regarding whether the impression for your lower right teeth requires impressions of both the upper and lower arches, the answer typically depends on the specific treatment plan your dentist has devised. In most cases, when creating a denture or partial denture, impressions of both arches are taken. This is because the dentist needs to ensure that the new prosthetic will fit well with your existing teeth and any other dental work, such as your bridge. The relationship between the upper and lower jaws is crucial for achieving proper bite alignment and function, so comprehensive impressions are often necessary.

Now, concerning your concern about the soft impression material being difficult to remove and whether it could affect your existing bridge, it’s important to understand how impression materials work. Soft impression materials, often made from silicone or polyether, are designed to capture the details of your teeth and gums accurately. While they can adhere tightly to the teeth, they should not damage existing dental work, such as bridges, when removed properly. However, if you feel that the material is excessively tight or if you experience discomfort during removal, it’s crucial to communicate this with your dentist. They can provide guidance on the best way to remove the impression material without risking damage to your bridge.

In some cases, if the impression material is too rigid or adheres too strongly, it may be necessary for the dentist to use a different technique or material for future impressions. Your comfort and the integrity of your existing dental work should always be a priority.

Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that if you have any concerns about the health of your gums or the stability of your bridge, it’s advisable to have those evaluated before proceeding with any new dental work. Sometimes, underlying issues can affect how well new prosthetics fit or function.

Lastly, if you have ongoing concerns about the impression process or the materials used, don’t hesitate to ask your dentist for clarification. They can explain the rationale behind their choices and reassure you about the safety and effectiveness of the materials and techniques being used.

In summary, while it is common to take impressions of both arches for denture fabrication, your specific case may vary based on your dental needs. The soft impression material should not harm your existing bridge if handled correctly, but always communicate any discomfort or concerns with your dentist to ensure a smooth and safe process. Your oral health and comfort are paramount, and a good dentist will be more than willing to address your questions and provide the necessary support throughout your treatment.
