Post-Surgery Care for Laser Circumcision: Managing Bleeding and Bandage Issues - Urology

Surgical dressing

Hello, I had laser circumcision surgery this morning.
After the procedure, the doctor only informed me of the follow-up appointment and did not mention that I need to change the dressing daily.
After dinner and taking my medication tonight, I noticed that the wound seems to be oozing a little blood.
I was wondering if I should change the dressing since I won't be able to see the doctor tomorrow.
While trying to remove the tape from the gauze, I found that the doctor's tape had adhered to the swollen skin over the wound, and even a slight pull caused significant pain.
What should I do?

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology

It is recommended to wash your hands thoroughly, disinfect your hands and the gauze wound with povidone-iodine, and then apply an oily ointment to lubricate the entire penis.
After that, try to remove the adhesive bandage.
If it is too painful to do so, you may need to go to the emergency department for further treatment.

After undergoing laser circumcision, it's crucial to manage your post-surgery care effectively to ensure proper healing and minimize complications. Here are some guidelines and recommendations based on your concerns regarding bleeding, bandage issues, and overall wound care.

1. Managing Bleeding and Wound Care
It's common to experience some bleeding or oozing from the surgical site in the days following the procedure. If you notice a small amount of blood or fluid, it may not be a cause for alarm, but you should monitor it closely. Here are steps you can take:
- Change the Bandage: If you see that the bandage is saturated with blood or fluid, it is advisable to change it. Use sterile gauze or a clean bandage to cover the area. If the bleeding is persistent or increases, you may need to apply gentle pressure to the area for a few minutes to help control it.

- Avoid Adhesive on the Wound: If the adhesive from the bandage is stuck to the wound, it can cause pain and potentially disrupt the healing tissue when removed. To alleviate this, you can moisten the adhesive with a saline solution or warm water to help loosen it before gently peeling it away. If this is too painful, consider using a pair of scissors to carefully cut away the bandage around the adhesive, being cautious not to touch the wound itself.

2. When to Seek Medical Attention
If you experience any of the following, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately:
- Excessive Bleeding: If the bleeding does not stop after applying pressure for 10-15 minutes.

- Signs of Infection: Increased redness, swelling, warmth around the wound, or discharge that is yellow or green.

- Severe Pain: If the pain becomes unmanageable or is accompanied by fever.

3. Pain Management
Post-operative pain is common, especially if the bandage is causing discomfort. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage pain. Always follow the dosage instructions on the label or those provided by your doctor.

4. Hygiene and Care
Maintaining cleanliness is vital for preventing infection:
- Keep the Area Clean: Gently clean the area with mild soap and water during showers. Avoid soaking the area in water (like baths or swimming) until it has healed sufficiently.

- Drying: After cleaning, pat the area dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing the area to prevent irritation.

5. Follow-Up Care
Since you mentioned that you cannot see your doctor tomorrow, it’s essential to keep track of your symptoms and any changes in your condition. If you have any concerns or if the situation worsens, do not hesitate to seek medical advice sooner rather than later.

6. Emotional Well-Being
Post-surgery recovery can be stressful, especially when complications arise. It’s important to talk about your feelings with someone you trust or seek support from friends or family. Managing anxiety and stress can positively influence your recovery process.

Conclusion
In summary, while some bleeding and discomfort are normal after laser circumcision, proper wound care, monitoring for signs of infection, and managing pain are crucial for a smooth recovery. If you encounter any significant issues, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing concerns promptly can help ensure a successful recovery.
