If you vomit after taking birth control pills, do you need to take an additional dose?

Hello Doctor: I have been taking the oral contraceptive pill (Kyliean) for almost a year.
Recently, I developed gastroenteritis, and about an hour after taking the eighth pill, I vomited due to gastrointestinal discomfort.
However, I only vomited a clear and very acidic liquid and did not see the whole pill.
Should I take an additional contraceptive pill? If I do not take an extra pill and have intercourse the next day (with ejaculation inside), is there a risk of pregnancy?

Juzi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/01/31

When it comes to the effectiveness of birth control pills, understanding how vomiting affects their absorption is crucial. In your case, since you vomited within an hour of taking your birth control pill, there is a possibility that the pill did not have enough time to be absorbed into your bloodstream. Generally, if vomiting occurs within two hours of taking a pill, it is recommended to take an additional pill to ensure continued contraceptive protection.

Given that you experienced vomiting shortly after taking your eighth pill, it would be prudent to take another pill from your pack as soon as possible. This is especially important if you are planning to engage in sexual intercourse the following day, as the risk of pregnancy increases if the pill was not fully absorbed.
In terms of the risk of pregnancy, if you do not take an extra pill and have unprotected intercourse (especially with ejaculation), there is a significant chance of becoming pregnant. Birth control pills work by preventing ovulation, and if the pill was not absorbed properly, ovulation could occur, leading to the possibility of fertilization if sperm is present.

It is also worth noting that if you continue to experience gastrointestinal issues, such as vomiting or diarrhea, it may affect the efficacy of your birth control pills. If vomiting persists or if you have any concerns about your health or the effectiveness of your contraceptive method, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and current situation.

In summary, since you vomited shortly after taking your birth control pill, you should take an extra pill to maintain contraceptive protection. If you choose not to take an additional pill and engage in sexual activity, you may be at risk for pregnancy. Always consult with a healthcare professional for tailored advice and to address any ongoing health concerns.
