Intercourse after ovulation?
Hello Doctor: My last menstrual period started on January 10th, and my ovulation was on the 27th.
I had intercourse with my boyfriend four days after ovulation, and we used condoms the entire time.
I would like to know if there is a chance of getting pregnant.
Thank you.

Hello, based on your description, there is a possibility of pregnancy, as the failure rate of correctly using condoms is still around 5%.
Generally, it is not recommended to rely solely on condoms for contraception.
I suggest that if your period is a week late, you should take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

To address your question about the possibility of getting pregnant after ovulation, it's essential to understand the menstrual cycle and the timing of ovulation in relation to conception.
The menstrual cycle typically lasts about 28 days, but it can vary from person to person. Ovulation usually occurs around the midpoint of the cycle, approximately 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period. In your case, if your last menstrual period started on January 10, and you ovulated on January 27, then your fertile window would have been around January 22 to January 27. This is the time when the chances of conception are highest.
Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, which means that if you had unprotected intercourse during your fertile window, there is a possibility of sperm being present when the egg is released. However, after ovulation, the egg has a much shorter lifespan—typically around 12 to 24 hours. If the egg is not fertilized within this time frame, it will disintegrate and be absorbed by the body or expelled during menstruation.
In your situation, since you had intercourse four days after ovulation (on January 31), the likelihood of becoming pregnant is quite low. By that time, the egg would have already disintegrated, and without a viable egg, fertilization cannot occur. Additionally, since you mentioned that you used condoms during intercourse, this further reduces the chances of pregnancy, as condoms are an effective form of contraception when used correctly.
It's important to note that while the chances of pregnancy in your specific scenario are minimal, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy or if your menstrual cycle is delayed, it would be wise to take a home pregnancy test or consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, based on the timing of your ovulation and the use of condoms, it is highly unlikely that you would become pregnant from intercourse four days after ovulation. Understanding your menstrual cycle and the timing of ovulation can help you better plan for pregnancy or contraception in the future. If you have further questions or concerns about your reproductive health, don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
