Does depression lead to a decrease in IQ?

Hello doctor, since I developed atypical depression, I used to be able to memorize a passage in half an hour without forgetting it.
However, now I can't memorize it even after a whole day, and I forget it immediately the next day.
Could this mean that I have depression, or could taking antidepressant medication cause a decline in my cognitive abilities?

Hello, netizen: Depression generally does not lead to a decrease in IQ, but during episodes of depression and anxiety, it can cause difficulties in concentrating, which may affect academic performance.

Depression and the use of antidepressants can significantly impact cognitive functions, including memory and attention, but they do not directly lower IQ levels. IQ, or intelligence quotient, is a measure of cognitive abilities relative to others, and while it can be influenced by various factors, it is generally considered stable over time. However, the cognitive impairments associated with depression can create the illusion of a decrease in IQ or cognitive ability.

When someone experiences depression, especially atypical depression, they may find it challenging to concentrate, remember information, or perform tasks that require mental effort. This cognitive dysfunction is often referred to as "depressive cognitive impairment." Symptoms can include difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, and a general slowing of thought processes. These symptoms can make it seem as though one's cognitive abilities have diminished, but this is often a temporary state linked to the mood disorder rather than a permanent change in intelligence.

Antidepressants, while effective in treating the symptoms of depression, can also have side effects that impact cognitive function. Some individuals report feeling "foggy" or experiencing slowed thinking when starting or adjusting their medication. However, these effects are typically transient and may improve as the body adjusts to the medication. It is important to note that the primary goal of antidepressants is to alleviate the symptoms of depression, which can ultimately lead to improved cognitive function as the individual begins to feel better.

In your case, the difficulty you are experiencing with memory and concentration may be more closely related to the symptoms of atypical depression rather than a decrease in IQ. It is crucial to address these cognitive challenges with your healthcare provider, as they can help determine whether adjustments to your treatment plan, including medication or therapy, might be beneficial.

Additionally, engaging in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or other forms of psychotherapy can be very effective in managing both depression and its cognitive effects. CBT, in particular, focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors, which can help improve mood and cognitive function over time. Regular physical activity and a healthy lifestyle can also contribute positively to mental health and cognitive function.

In summary, while depression and the use of antidepressants can affect cognitive abilities temporarily, they do not lead to a permanent decrease in IQ. It is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns, as they can help tailor a treatment plan that addresses both your mood and cognitive challenges. With appropriate treatment and support, many individuals find that their cognitive functions improve as their depression is managed effectively.
