Eyebrows are not growing?
When I was young, I shaved off part of my eyebrows with a razor, but that area has not grown back, resulting in a patchy appearance, which is often referred to as a "broken eyebrow." However, upon closer inspection, I can see some fine hairs in the area, but they do not grow long.
I am unsure if this can be treated and which medical specialty I should consult.
Could you please help me with this? Thank you!

Dr. Liao Wenyu reply Dermatology
Based on your description, it is possible that the lack of eyebrow growth is due to scarring.
A detailed examination is necessary to understand the situation better, so I recommend that you consult with a plastic surgeon.

Eyebrow loss, or the inability of eyebrows to grow back after being shaved or plucked, can be a frustrating experience for many individuals. Understanding the reasons behind this phenomenon and exploring potential solutions can help you regain confidence in your appearance.
Reasons for Eyebrow Loss
1. Trauma to Hair Follicles: When you shave or excessively pluck your eyebrows, you can damage the hair follicles. Hair follicles are responsible for hair growth, and if they are damaged, they may not produce hair again. This is particularly true if the hair has been removed repeatedly over time.
2. Aging: As we age, hair growth slows down, and this includes eyebrow hair. Hormonal changes can also affect hair growth patterns, leading to thinner or sparse eyebrows.
3. Nutritional Deficiencies: Lack of essential nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, E, biotin, and omega-3 fatty acids, can impact hair growth. A diet lacking in these nutrients may lead to hair loss or stunted growth.
4. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as alopecia areata, hypothyroidism, or skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, can lead to hair loss, including in the eyebrows. If you notice other symptoms, it may be worth consulting a healthcare professional.
5. Genetics: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to thinner eyebrows or hair loss in general. If your family has a history of sparse eyebrows, this could be a contributing factor.
Solutions for Eyebrow Regrowth
1. Patience and Time: Sometimes, the best solution is simply to wait. Hair growth can take time, and if the follicles are still healthy, they may eventually produce hair again. Typically, eyebrow hair grows at a rate of about 0.16 mm per day.
2. Nutritional Support: Ensure that your diet is rich in vitamins and minerals that promote hair growth. Foods high in protein, healthy fats, and vitamins can support overall hair health. Consider incorporating foods like eggs, nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and fish into your diet.
3. Topical Treatments: There are various topical treatments available that may stimulate hair growth. Products containing minoxidil, commonly used for scalp hair loss, have been used off-label for eyebrows. However, it is essential to consult with a dermatologist before starting any treatment.
4. Eyebrow Serums: Many cosmetic brands offer eyebrow serums designed to promote growth. These serums often contain peptides and other nourishing ingredients that can help stimulate hair follicles.
5. Consult a Dermatologist: If your eyebrows do not show signs of regrowth after a reasonable period, it may be beneficial to consult a dermatologist. They can assess your situation, check for underlying medical conditions, and recommend appropriate treatments.
6. Microblading or Tattooing: If you are looking for immediate cosmetic solutions, microblading or eyebrow tattooing can create the appearance of fuller eyebrows. These procedures involve semi-permanent ink and can last for several months to years.
7. Hormonal Evaluation: If you suspect that hormonal imbalances may be affecting your hair growth, consider consulting an endocrinologist. They can perform tests to determine if hormonal issues are at play.
Conclusion
In summary, eyebrow loss can result from various factors, including trauma to hair follicles, aging, nutritional deficiencies, medical conditions, and genetics. While it may take time for your eyebrows to grow back, there are several solutions available, ranging from dietary changes and topical treatments to cosmetic procedures. If you are concerned about your eyebrow growth or suspect an underlying medical issue, consulting a healthcare professional is the best course of action. They can provide personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific needs.
