Anal hygiene
I heard another female surgeon mention anal hygiene.
How should one clean the anus? It should only be wiped until there are faint marks, and the order should be water wash > wet wipes > dry wipe.
Personally, I always squat down to wipe, but I’ve asked many people and they either half-squat or sit while wiping.
I want to ask the doctor if it’s sufficient to clean just around the anal opening, or should I also wipe slightly inside the anal canal? In the past, I would wipe around the inside of the anal opening in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions, but this takes too much time—up to 15 minutes.
I worry that my patients might not receive suction during that time and might say goodbye to me.
So, what is the recommended position and the extent of anal cleaning? I would like to seek your advice, thank you.

Generally, it is sufficient to maintain cleanliness around the anal area, and it should not be significantly related to posture.

Effective anal hygiene is an important aspect of personal care that can help prevent infections and maintain overall health. When it comes to cleaning the anal area, there are several techniques and considerations to keep in mind to ensure that the process is both effective and safe.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that the primary goal of anal hygiene is to clean the area without causing irritation or injury. The anal region is sensitive, and excessive scrubbing or using harsh materials can lead to discomfort, inflammation, or even infections. Therefore, the approach to cleaning should be gentle and mindful.
1. Cleaning Techniques: The method of cleaning can vary based on personal preference and comfort. As you mentioned, the order of cleaning can be water washing, followed by wet wipes, and then dry wiping. This is a reasonable approach. Water is generally the most effective way to remove fecal matter and bacteria, and it is less likely to irritate the skin compared to wipes or dry toilet paper. If using wipes, it is advisable to choose those that are alcohol-free and unscented to minimize irritation.
2. Positioning: The position you choose for cleaning can also affect the effectiveness of the process. Squatting or sitting can provide different angles for cleaning. Many people find that a slight squat or leaning forward can help access the area more effectively. However, the key is to find a position that feels comfortable and allows you to clean without straining.
3. Extent of Cleaning: It is generally sufficient to clean the area around the anal opening. Inserting anything into the anal canal for cleaning is not recommended unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional. The anal canal is self-cleaning to a degree, and excessive cleaning inside can disrupt the natural flora and lead to irritation or infections. If you feel the need to clean inside, it is crucial to do so very gently and with a clean, soft material.
4. Time Consideration: Spending excessive time on anal hygiene, such as 15 minutes, may not be necessary and could lead to irritation. A thorough cleaning should ideally take a few minutes. Focus on being efficient while ensuring that you are gentle. If you find that you are spending too much time, consider simplifying your technique or using tools that can help you clean more effectively in less time.
5. Post-Cleaning Care: After cleaning, it is important to ensure that the area is dry. Moisture can lead to irritation or fungal infections. Patting the area dry with a soft towel or toilet paper can help. If you experience any irritation or discomfort after cleaning, consider adjusting your technique or consulting a healthcare professional.
6. Health Considerations: If you have any underlying health conditions, such as hemorrhoids or anal fissures, it is crucial to be extra gentle and possibly consult with a healthcare provider for tailored advice. They may recommend specific products or techniques that can help alleviate discomfort while maintaining hygiene.
In summary, effective anal hygiene involves gentle cleaning of the anal area, using water as the primary method, and avoiding excessive scrubbing or insertion. Finding a comfortable position and being mindful of the time spent on cleaning can help maintain both hygiene and comfort. If you have any concerns or experience discomfort, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
