A male who is 159 cm tall is inquiring about minimally invasive height increase surgery?

Hello Doctor, I am currently 23 years old and have had an X-ray that shows my growth plates have fully closed.
I learned too late that growth hormone therapy could have been an option for me.
My father is 183 cm, my mother is 158 cm, and my younger brother is 178 cm, while I am only 159 cm as a male.
Because of my height, I have always felt insecure and have been seeing a psychiatrist for a year.
I also tend to avoid going out with my family due to my height, and my mindset has prevented me from having a girlfriend.
I have researched extensively online, but there is very little information available in recent years regarding this topic.

What I found includes:
1.
Minimally invasive height increase surgery using implants
2.
Minimally invasive osteotomy height increase surgery
Regarding option 1, I couldn't find relevant cases, prices, or doctors performing this procedure.
For option 2, I found information about a cosmetic surgery in Las Vegas, USA, which involves externally controlled daily bone lengthening (https://www.google.com/amp/s/kknews.cc/health/y59nv2j.amp).

I would like to ask you if there are any practitioners in Taiwan performing either option 1 or 2.
Additionally, how much funding would I need to save for both procedures (including rehabilitation and the time I would be unable to work)? What are the estimated costs for options 1 and 2? Would I be able to return to normal activities at work, or would I need to take a leave of absence for a period? Thank you, Doctor!

159, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/02/22

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

Bone lengthening surgery involves cutting the original healthy bone (such as the femur or tibia) and then using instruments to gradually lengthen it, often with the implantation of intramedullary nails.
After extending the bone to a certain length, it is stabilized to allow for proper healing, and the fixation device is removed later.
This procedure typically requires at least two surgeries and can be quite painful, with numerous potential complications.
As a result, there are currently few surgeons willing to perform this operation.
The entire process may take six months to a year from start to finish.

More Info

When it comes to height increase surgery, particularly for individuals whose growth plates have closed, the options are limited but evolving. As you mentioned, there are two primary types of minimally invasive surgeries that have gained attention in recent years: the implantable height increase surgery and the limb lengthening surgery.

1. Implantable Height Increase Surgery: This method involves the insertion of devices that can gradually lengthen the bones over time. However, this technique is still relatively new, and there is limited information available regarding its effectiveness, safety, and long-term outcomes. As of now, it is not widely practiced, and specific case studies or success rates are hard to come by. The costs for such procedures can vary significantly based on the surgeon's expertise, the technology used, and the facility. It's essential to consult with a qualified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in this area to get accurate information on availability and pricing.

2. Limb Lengthening Surgery: This is a more established method, often involving a procedure called distraction osteogenesis. In this surgery, the bone is surgically cut, and a device is attached to the limb that gradually pulls the two ends of the bone apart. This process stimulates new bone growth in the gap created. The procedure is complex and requires a significant commitment to rehabilitation. The costs for limb lengthening surgery can range from $50,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the location, surgeon, and any additional treatments required. Recovery can take several months, during which you may need to take time off work. Patients often require physical therapy to regain strength and mobility after the procedure.

In terms of recovery and rehabilitation, both types of surgeries require a considerable amount of time and effort. For limb lengthening, patients typically need to use crutches for several weeks to months, and full recovery can take up to a year. During this time, you may need to adjust your work commitments, as physical activity will be limited.

Regarding your concerns about self-esteem and social interactions, it’s important to recognize that height is just one aspect of who you are. Many people find confidence and fulfillment in various other attributes, such as personality, skills, and interests. Engaging in therapy or counseling can help address feelings of inadequacy and improve your self-image, regardless of your height.

Before considering any surgical options, it's crucial to have thorough discussions with healthcare professionals who can provide insights based on your specific situation. They can help you weigh the risks and benefits, as well as explore alternative methods to enhance your confidence and well-being.

In summary, while height increase surgeries are available, they come with significant costs, risks, and recovery times. It's essential to consult with qualified medical professionals to explore your options and make an informed decision. Additionally, addressing self-esteem issues through counseling may provide valuable support as you navigate these feelings.
